There's always the Composer element of the Mozilla suite for creating web pages. (Soon to be replaced by Composer++ (NVU).))

If you just need to do simple web pages then AOLPress is a nice simple program. It's an ancient program that was discontinued by AOL but still very useful.

If you don't mind getting your hands a little dirty HTML-Kit can be nice.

For GIMP, the best way to learn it is to go through the tutorials there on the GIMP site. GIMP does a few things differently, like drawing lines. But it's all very intuitive once you learn it. But really, go through the tutorials and you will thank yourself!

And with the selection tool, GIMP just uses various selection tools for different purposes. So it does depend on what you want to do to decide what tool to pick. There may be something I don't know, but that's because I don't use it. I like the way it does work though. Good luck!

Oh, and there is a user manual. You can see it by just selecting "Help". It doesn't say manual, just help. And it's also available on the internet in the documentation section, same as the tutorials.

It's like seven in the morning here.. and ive spent the whole night trying to figure GIMP, got the help files open... All that i can say s that it comes accross as very powerful.. but for someone who has no background with design.. it's a bit to take.. still.. i might enjoy this...

I also wanted t know.. is it possible to create a website within GIMP ? Cause i really dont see myself making tons of small graphics and then alligning them in VMU.. thats not the way it's done is it ?

wish me luck..

The best I saw and tried was by Effective Studios:

You could also look at Swishzone (www.swishzone.com) and their Swishsites product.

This one by far is the mostly instantly gratifying IMO:
Actual Drawing

This along side Gimp will get you going and both are free. Actual Drawing does have a small nag screen at bottom but it's tolerable. The upgrade price isn't much either.

That's a lot of great resources for site building, but does anyone offer free hosting? Is there free site-hosting that can host flash intros/movies?
