to be able to use this software, in a live situation, as a recorder, with the onyx stuff, as advertised, one needs to be able to create/save templates for the different sets that the bands of the day/evening will be performing, at some point before the venue begins.
we need this very very basic feature before tracktion can even be considered as a professional app, useable in a real world situation, as it is advertised by mackie.
personally, i have not found an easy way to accomplish this at a venue, "on the fly." so, we need to be able, in some way, to do this before hand, i suppose.
and i suppose i am a fool for not researching this product further before buying the onyx with the software. i bought, thinking that this was a total solution, as it's advertised. this is not even close to a total solution. without the ability to prepare beforehand, this isn't even in the same league as a professional application. period.
professional recordists look for the ability to be able to prepare and plan. take that into consideration. it would be wise to include this feature into the next update or version. until then, it's a toy. please don't take offense to this. it's not an opinion, just a cold, hard, real world fact.
at the point that it includes saveable templates, it will become a pro app. simply.
that's my only problem with tracktion. other than that, it's fine. love everything else.

No, it's an opinion - Tracktion isn't trying to be all things to all men, and just because it doesn't have a function that you require and others don't doesn't make it any more or less of a toy or a professional product. As many people here are using it in studios on a professional basis indicates that it is far from a toy.lharless wrote:until then, it's a toy. please don't take offense to this. it's not an opinion, just a cold, hard, real world fact.
Anyhoo, to address what you are saying, I presume you want to have something set up with multiple audio tracks ready to record?
In which case create a new project. In the default edit, create as many tracks as you need, set up the record inputs and arming for the tracks and save the edit, which will retain this information. Now make multiple copies of this empty edit, which you can then open later and they will miraculously be ready for recording!

make an archive of the empty set-up edit. whenever you want to make a new project, simply import the archive - each time you do this it will ask you to choose a destination directory; therefore you are setting up a NEW project based on a PRE-DESIGNED SETUP. this is exactly a template. it is exactly what other sequencers do also, but it's just not named that way.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

remember that T2 can assign all of your inputs to consecutive tracks in one pass.

you could always open an existing edit that has the right configuration, delete all the clips, rename the edit and roll...
I think the "toy" vs "pro" language is not to the point. I just played a casio sampling keyboard (the $25 AA kind from the 80s) - a toy - on a big budget record so...

The problem with live use isn't assigning new inputs quickly, it's balancing the system beforehand and saving all the input / output levels.Lunch Money wrote:As mentioned, T2's ability to assign all inputs sequentially in one click will largely do away with his need for a template, though a template is still possible using the other suggestions.
I set my levels sometimes days before and just save the edit. Tracktion seems to work fine this way.

What levels do you need to set in Tracktion?chinadrum wrote:The problem with live use isn't assigning new inputs quickly, it's balancing the system beforehand and saving all the input / output levels.
You shouldn't be adjusting any input gains in software: that should be done with your hardware mixer / pre-amps..

That works, but it's kind of a workaround. What would have been great (and probably easy to implement) would be to have a folder beneath the active and library folders, called "templates". The save menu in the main editing window could have an extra option "save edit as template"make an archive of the empty set-up edit. whenever you want to make a new project, simply import the archive - each time you do this it will ask you to choose a destination directory; therefore you are setting up a NEW project based on a PRE-DESIGNED SETUP. this is exactly a template. it is exactly what other sequencers do also, but it's just not named that way.

It may be a workaround, but it's a very quick and easy workaround, and one that's obvious enough that even my dumb DAW newbie ass figured it out on my own.
And it's not like you have to do it every time... just once per template per project. Import an instance of each template you need to use in a project, and as soon as you open the edit, save as with a new name (you'd be naming your edit after loading the template anyways, right? so no extra steps there) and you'll always have that empty template in your project folder whenever you need to start a new edit.
Sure, it's a couple extra clicks initially, but that's a pretty good trade-off for the countless clicks you'll save doing everything else, in my opinion (or perhaps I should call it a "fact";) )
