how is it not the same thing tho??
if you click NEW PROJECT you have to choose somewhere to save it and give it a name.
if you open an archived 'template', you then have to choose somewhere to base it.
it's exactly the same amount of work, there's not a single thing that's different about this process other than the fact that there's no button marked template. not a thing. it's only a 'workaround' because it's not listed as an official feature.
make a 'template'. export edit as archive. done.

i stand by my statement that tracktion (of which i love, so hold up on the harassment, kids) is definitely NOT suitable in the LIVE VENUE recording area. note that i said live recording...
until you can create and save a template, it will not be a professional live recording application. simply. and no matter how much you love and hug tracktion and tell it that it is a good dog, it will not be a professional live recording application, until templates are included. period.
if i said "toy", i take that back. i didn't intend to sound as though i think that tracktion is a toy. if i thought that it was a toy, i wouldn't be here, with so much gusto for the application and adding my input for ideas on the software. i would be in a nuendo or pro tools forum. my apologies to tracktion (good doggy!)...
im just trying to get it to do what i need. nothing else out there comes close with the GUI. nothing out there comes close with the ease of use. so im going to let it be known what i see that could be improved upon,in the whole application.
get used to my input. ill always say what i think. and you will rarely see me settle for what's in front of me. and that's why i make good money doing what i do. i don't settle for mediocre.

Ummm... you can create and save a template, and it's quite simple. Have you not been paying attention? The idea that a slightly different method of doing it constitutes the difference between a pro app and a non-pro app seems a bit silly to me, but you're entitled to your opinon (err... I meant "fact", of course).

well i'm happy to say what i think, and i think "what the flaming fuckrod is this guy talking about?"
it IS templates. it's just not called templates.. if it makes you feel happier then you can save them all with ------>TEMPLATE<--------- in the filename and then you'll be able to understand what it means. just because it doesn't pop up a window saying "hi buddy! i'm here to make your day swell and show you my 'template' tattoo on my ass! press it and we'll make sweet efficient recordings of live music!" doesn't mean that it's not exactly what you're describing as a 'missing feature'

okay, it works but it won't open a second instance of it if one you've already made with it is an 'open project' done is still open (because it has the same internal ID) so you do have a point, and a 'template' wouldn't have this problem.
but to say that it's not a professional application and not suitable for live use is probably the most retarded thing i've heard all week. this isn't defending Tracktion, this is just sheer awe at the incomprehensible way your brain seems to work. period.

Its easier than that I think: just create a template edit, name it "template" and in future, instead of pressing the "new edit" button, just select the template and press "create a copy".
Rename the copy, and away you go.. where's the problem?

That's where the "save as" thing that I mentioned comes in handy. It's also good to make a couple incremental archives of the template in case you forget. Only takes a moment.haydxn wrote:okay, it works but it won't open a second instance of it if one you've already made with it is an 'open project' done is still open (because it has the same internal ID) so you do have a point, and a 'template' wouldn't have this problem.

Yes and I was one of them. I really would like to hear just how Iharless would like his "template function" to work? There isn't a whole lot to do on the recording end. For a typical recording gig I know how many groups and how many sets I am going to be recording in advance. In advance I set up directories, and create a default edit setup for how I want to record. This default edit isn't really a big deal. I connect the inputs, name the tracks and set the bit depths. That is about all I can do in advance. Once at the gig if my inputs don't match my track names just drag tracks around or make some quick changes. If these are changes that need to stay for the rest of the gig I'll just save the new default edit and put a copy in each of the directories I set up. Once I am set for the first act I "save as" the edit under a new name and hit record. Once the first act is done I save the edit, open the default edit in a new directory, "save as" under another new name and hit record. There is almost no time involved. The tracks are saved as soon you stop recording and the edits load and save instantaniously. I could and often do just continue recording in the same directory and sort the files into subdirectories later. Just how could a template make this any simpler. The only beefs I have with tracking live performances with T1 were trying to sort through the pile of inputs and not being able to see more than one input meter at a time. The first one is nothing more than an anoyance. The second one isn't a showstopper either if you have already matched the gains thoughout the recording chain. Both of these of course have been addressed in T2.Lunch Money wrote:Seems to me that in a recent thread, 2 people WERE describing using Tracktion and their hardware (one Onyx, I believe) purely for live venues, in a professional setting.

Yep. The way I see it, if Tracktion (or the computer it's running on) dies, so do all the soft synths and effects.platinumears wrote:You don't mean you mix the FOH sound through Tracktion do you??chinadrum wrote: Tracktion is my mixer!![]()

Before you say that I'm riding a bike on tightrope in doing this...I agree.
But Tracktion is ultra-stable and lets me just load a different edit and the 'venue' or my 'home studio' settings come straight up. What I'd love to see in Tracktion for live use is an interface to the firewire software of the mixer so Tracktion can control and save these settings within an edit. That would rock!

that thought terrifies me! I don't even like using digital mixers live, let alone a bloody laptop and a mouse! what if a vocal mic feeds back?

I'm not sure what Iharless wants, but templates could be used/implemented in the following way:Tim Brackett wrote:Yes and I was one of them. I really would like to hear just how Iharless would like his "template function" to work?
I have a large number of edits with different soft synth and effect setups that I have made and mixed in my home studio. Say I want to go out to a venue and use these same edits for a performance. Now, I'd also like to slightly adjust some of the output levels, apply different eq, and boost the guitar input (the guitarist gets a bit excited when live so I back things off by 6dB in the external pre-amp to avoid clipping).
A good templating system would let me just re-point the edits to a different template with the adjusted settings. Now if I go away and tweak the soft synth edits in the studio, I only have to do it once and it works for both the live venue and the home studio.
A really really good templating system would allow multiple parent templates to be selected that would let me use the "synth setup" as one template and combine it with an "input/output levels" template to create a ready to go edit for live recording.
The ultimate templating system would let me do this en-masse across multiple edits at once and let me instantly close and load the next/new edit between songs with a single button push.
This would also help when changing the sound input device from one to another. Tracktion seems to have a global sound card setup, so everytime I change sound cards I have to stuff around with all my edits to get the inputs and outputs setup in a sane way. I currently have two sets of edits for two different machines.
There are things still missing from Tracktion that are way more useful than heirarchial templates. (eg. better all round midi support - aftertouch, decent channel filtering/mixing/splitting).
