I need to know.In t1 is the master volume fader pre or post inserts.. It should be post inserty..

but

Also, none of the clip leds within Final mix are lighting up during the passage of the song, however, the T1 master meter clip light if coming on every now and then. What do i follow ? All faders are at unity.

I gave the mda dither plug inserted affter final mix... possible that the noise being induced here is raising the level of the mix just that much ??? this is a heavy metal mix, so i am pushing it. I think thats it.

Thats why i want final mix to have dither built in...

Master volume is post-insert. If you insert a dither plug here, you MUST make sure the master fader is at unity. (the same would apply if Final Mix added the dither)

The different meters will be using different methods to detct "overs" which is why they don't agree: I suggest ignoring both of these and relying on Inspector.

Inspector is also very useful in that it provides RMS level metering on the same scale as Peak metering: the difference between these two is known as the "peak to average ratio" and if it this is too small it means your audio is too compressed. Generally speaking, if your peaks are hitting OdbFS, the RMS levels should be no higher than about -9dBFS (for a very compressed mix) preferably a lot less.

ofcource.. i have been told to use inspector previously also.. stupid of me to have forgotten.

and if we are using dither as the last bit of processing in the mastering chain.. why is it that we MUST have the faders at unity ?

thanks

Because dithering involves adding noise to the signal, and for it to work the noise needs to be at exactly the right volume..

(you can always add another Vol / Pan filter before the diher plug if you need to change the gain.)

sorry where does dither fit in here?

I havent really played with these compressors, I sometimes get a little scared with this type, its the same as the ones in adobe audition... makes me nervous :)

Always right at the end of the chain, if you are dropping the bit-depth (eg: to 16-bit for CD)

If in doubt just turn on Tracktion's own dither, and don't worry about it any further.. ;)

hey rpc , i love final mix, if you want to learn more bout compression try toying with the kjauer classic compressor free, n then the blockfish digitalfishphones.com , more simplified compressors.. the final mix is actually 3 compressor used in a chain along with eq, i like some of the presets, i mainly use the compressor presets n mess with the eq, the eq is awsome.........

I understand compressors... they just... ugh.. i use blockfish often.

bout the EQ, i really like it.. but i feel tweaking it is a pain. I like to be able to tweak eq's the way i can Equim. Final mix just is not that responsive.
