for anyone who doubted my characterisation of T being marketed as a prosumer product:

I would suggest that advertising to the mac world might want to call Tracktion a lower cost alternative to Logic. (with a unique full-screen inteface and legendary ease-of-use blah blah blah.)

You can't go head to head with GarageBand on price and so have to call the product "Professional" and suggest that it goes head to head with Logic (which it does).

just to be a total ass...

compare to this press release, complete with prices!

Would this be the bit that irks so much ?

"First announced at NAMM in January, Kontakt 2 is now available in stores worldwide."

that and the T release reads like it was written by a retard - compare!

And while I'm ragging on the marketing, I would point out that the feature list on the website includes fab features like "scaleable interface" (oooh_) and "send and return functionality" , per track inputs?! and I'm assuming that by "single screen interface" they mean "simgle window interface".... Meanwhile some of Ts strongest features: racks, vst automation, per-clip vsts are nowhere mentioned.

Suggestion: perhaps they should tease out the otherwise not interesting "new in T2 features" like scaleable window, from features special to T (racks 64 -bit mixbuss) and drop them lower on the page.

I have a feeling that Mackie intends that page to be for a "what's new" page. However, I agree with you that they should have a more detailed page once it's released, one that shows the great features of T2, even if they aren't new.

But then what about Soundtrack Pro? I dont see any way out of this one man. Tracktion just cant compete with anything Apple does. I think they should just give up and go back to PC only.

sorry folks - I just think its a drag. In my view Tracktion *is* powerful and could be/should be a real competitor to Cubase/DP/Logic/Sonar. I'm hoping that its feature set grows (in an orderly tracktionesque way) to satisfy pro needs. Because I would love to be able to use it in pro settings etc etc.

I also want to see it succeed which means that lame self defeating marketing like labeling the product "prosumer" in a press release is *a bad thing*.

I am hoping against hope that Mackie knows how to sell software.

Well it clearly doesn't yet. Let's hope they're fast learners or get in suitable talent pdq.

Isn't there a danger though that to be considered against those products it would need to fit in with their user base's preferred method of working (mixers, bloat, a gazzillion screens  )

In all seriousness though there is the risk that to tempt a wider, richer userbase that the core ideal might need to be diluted - that would be a shame.

you're right Tim: I wouldn't want T to become bloatware...

But I think T needs to go after their users. I am someone who has jumped ship from DP because of workflow - In a few point versions of T I hope to be able to get rid of DP altogether. In any case I think that "serious" users if induced to check T out might buy it as a second DAW - as many have bought Live - but if it is called "prosumer" and all sorts of non-features are touted in the PR in broken English, they will write it off as not worth looking at.

"Serious" users don't judge a product by the marketing hype..

Sadly a lot of people are afraid of using software they think is "cheap". They assume for exmple that expensive plugs are materially different from free ones. There is a lot of style and mystery in the recording biz.

Occasionally inexpensive products can aquire a buzz that make them "useable" for pro's - an example would be the FMR Really Nice Compressor or the original SansAmp.

Conversely a soft like Fruity Loops can be stigmatized because of its perceived "toyness" - that's why Cakewalk became Sonar, no?

Anyway - when I tell people about T - that you can see the whole signal path AND your clips all the time - that clips can host plugs - and that it has NO menus and ONE window they are always intrigues and willing t have a look. All I want is for Mackie to tell that to the world rather than that there is a new prosumer tool that "includes many features for... recording tracks... on a mac."
