FR: patch name on midi devices

Hi, I don't think that this has been implemented, at least not on the mac side. I don't refer to general MIDI, which is obviously there, but to other devices that don't follow the general midi standard.
Feel free to tell me I'm wrong and that it has been there all the time.
Cheers,
Coltell

Usually, patch name shows up in the lower window where the interface for the VSTi is shown - oops, I just realized that I assumed you are using VSTi only for MIDI playout (what I do). I forget that some people actually have invested in outboard midi gear that makes sounds instead of just entering midi data into the host DAW/Sequencer.
Yeah, your idea would be cool, just to show up in the corner of the midi clip for example.

No, actually, the list for GM sounds is there. What you can't access is a list for alternative patches in case that the synth doesn't follow the GM spec. That's what I'm asking (and really, for a proper MIDI sequencer it's a must. You can't expect everyone to use GM anymore).

Can't do I think. The problem actually is: you can't expect Tracktion to know how the patches of your specific outboar midi gear are named.coltell wrote:You can't expect everyone to use GM anymore).
GM is a published set, everything else can vary between devices and users and elapsing time. How would Tracktion know you've replaced a patch? Last time I read the midi specs a device can't send patch names.

Uhh, sorry I didn't reply before, it kind of skip... I know that you can't have this automatically, but at least other sequencers allow to modify the list or use some sort of standard format, so users (or the programmers, as is the case of DP, for example) can interchange their patch list. Heck, you don't even need to invent anything, since .midnam is used by DP and Protools (or an .ini in cakewalk or I can't remember the extension in Logic or cubase). It is basically a XML formatted list. There's a very handy utility called cherrypicker that allows you to modify the list very easily. If you've already done it or it comes as factory settings from DP, you wouldn't need to change anything. If you edit a patch, then you'd need to update the list with your own changes.
Anyway, it think it's feasible because all the big sequencers have it and, in my opinion, Tracktion should also have it.

Personally I just name the track the patch name.

A bit of a clumsy workaround... But thanks
