Is -90db quiet enough??

Sup everyone. I'm exporting a project for a session in ProTools so I have to export every instrument separately. I'm noticing that my noise floor is at about -90 db's. Is that about normal? These tracks are coming from VST's so I thought the noise floor would be a complete flat line during the quiet parts. Just curious if I'm missing something.

Why not do the export in 24 bits? It should sound a lot better in any case!

-90dB is very near to the absolute noise floor you possibly can have with 16bits. It is the very last bit going 10010011011 etc. So not to worry... If you have a couple of tracks like that and go mix them, you'll probably drop the volume on each to prevent clipping of the mix. You could do worse!
But why not export as .mid and let ProTools play the instruments again? That would save some storage space and transfer time! Unless ofcourse you don't want to bother...

Thanks for that!C00kie wrote:-90dB is very near to the absolute noise floor you possibly can have with 16bits. It is the very last bit going 10010011011 etc. So not to worry... Because I use a lot of PC only plug-ins such as WusikStation, EVE, EXT, Synth1, SEplug-ins etc. and the studio uses Mac. Besides it costs about a thousand dollars a day to record there and I wouldnt want to risk having incompatible files.C00kie wrote: But why not export as .mid and let ProTools play the instruments again? Make sure to pay attention what they're doing and with what gear while you're in that studio. After you get home, asses what the difference is with your home setup.AD80 wrote:it costs about a thousand dollars a day to record there
I bet the critical success factor is not really the gear, but the person controlling it. Can be worth that price! So try to look what he's doing exactly.
NB: render to 24 or 32bits indeed!

Can anyone actually hear -90 dB ? Ill doubt it... (or maybe in a quiet environment one can... never been that quiet for me in all my life...)
