Sounded lovely, but how about offering the dry and the amped clips?

Post

Not sure (see my previous post-heard only the lofi versions) but seems like the first part of each mp3 is the dry version

LOL, that should teach me not to try and do too many things at once, I missed the first dry parts

Midiworks, the new demos sound good, but there is still too much distortion on them (for my taste). How about some completely clean demos? BTW sorry I haven't been able to record anything, I have been extremely busy with school and work lately, as well as being quite sick (I just found out I have a parasitic infection!) :(

Post

Hi Midiworks, now I have listened to the hi-fi versions too. There are some nice tones there and the cab sims seem to work fine. However, as brian said, the distortion is too much esp. for "riviera" and "stang". When I posted my takes I thought you knew the originals but as you said you are more into metal sounds. If you don't have access to the originals but still want to aproximate SRVs sound the key is to have low drive settings. The sound must be clean , breaking only if strings are heavily strung. Pride should have the more crunchy sound, riviera must have a bell like clean ringing sound and stang is closer to the traditional jazzy sound so it would be better with a less distorted , darker sound (the original is not played with a Strat though so maybe it's dificult to achieve this sound with the take that I sent you)

However, I think I should repeat that there are some interresting tones there

Good luck

The first part of EVERY mp3 is the dry version ! ;)

Yes zeoy, I dont know the originals at all...
I will give it another try later on.

Thanks everyone for the comments ! :)

Didn't SRV use a tube screamer pedal to get his 'sound'? I just listened to Texas Flood (great album!) and I love that Strat neck pickup overdriven sound, but it sounds nothing like the pride, riviera and stang mp3 clips.

Post

Didn't actually SRV used two amplifiers simultaneously, Dumble and Fender, Dumble slightly distorted? Definition and attack was from one, cleaner amp, and other was giving more sustain? I remember that Line 6 emulation has this two amp models together, but don't remember all the details and can't find my POD user manual right now.

On the other hand, most important component in his sound was SRV himself, bending the steel with his bare hands. Most of his sound was coming from his fingers, and I don't think that it is possible to emulate... at least not in digital domain

Post

And let's not forget that SRV used an otherworldly string gauge (like .13 to whatever), which IMO is adding a LOT to whatever guitar tone.

Those who can do maths and those who can't.

I remember reading in 1995 Guitar World SRV special about roadie fixing his fingers with superglue in the middle of a gig  :-o My god. But I think he was playing .13 only in his earlier days, but changed to .11 later, tuned to E flat.

...and sorry about off topic, Midiworks.

Post

In fact, he used .16-.17 gauge strings early on! It was only later that his roadies/techs convinced him to go easier on his fingers. He also used Fender Bassman, Vibratone, and Marshall amps early on. I think he switched to a Dumble SOD and then a SSS later on. Anyway, this is way off topic! :)

Midiworks, if you could redo the Riviera and Pride demos with an even cleaner setting, that would be great! We have already heard how good your distorted tones are...

BTW I love .12-.13 gauge strings, such thick tone! I have one guitar setup for them all the time.

Post

I use .13's on my acoustic, but I can't bring myself to do it on electric. I love the tone, but the trade-off isn't cutting it for me. I use .11s on one guitar and .10s on the other. :D

Nothing here is really off-topic ;)

I like the 2 amp idea !
Want to give that a try. :)

But it will cost you, because of the 2 speaker sims.
They will be running all the time.
Use is ca. 2-2.5% on my p4 2ghz for one...
But an very interesting, unique and tempting idea ! :)

Who please is SRV ?
Link ?

cool sounds. I mainly use a Palmer Speaker Simulator for guitar. NI Guitar Rig also sounds good, but I don't like the latency it causes, even 6 ms is too much for me.
Kind regards,
