no.. mastering is where an engineer uses upward expansion to try to undo the excessive compression applied at the mix stage. :P

seriously though: if you are paying a mastering engineer to process your stereo mixes, why on earth would you do any of his work for him? He can apply any compression that is needed, probably with much better equipment than you, and with the experience to know how much to use.. (if not, why hire him in the first place?)

I usually mix in confusion. And a tad of chaos. But that's just me.

Mixing and compression/limting is so genre/song dependant that it's too hard to make a specific generalization. If you're mixing a pop tune for pop radio that will be popped into an mp3 you might want it to pop with lots of squashed square waves. 8)

If there's a hard and fast rule about mixing we should find out about it now. And break it.

If I took my car to be valeted, I'd get arrested for teminal optimism.

Personally, if I can afford to have it 'professionally' mastered, then I can afford to have it professionally mixed. If I can afford to have it mixed, I can afford to have it professionally recorded. If I can afford to have it professionally recorded, I can afford to have it professionally performed. And if....

Much prefer being a gifted amateur. Besides, mastering for digital is waaay over-rated. Great for cutting lacquer tho.

Wow.. very impressive singing. And a beautiful song! Compliments. Love it! :)

whatever. comps don't add intensity, they add compression. If you can work it well and like what it does, use it - its your record, right?

and the majority of albums sound like crap.

Sadly, the majority were profesionally mastered. On really expensive gear. In really expensive rooms.

Good taste: Priceless. For everything else there's the four global record companies.
