how do we set up vsti's to play back the preset we chose? i don't get it, they keep snapping back to preset 1....

Valley's answer is the most likely, but here's another: If you hit "home" to return the cursor to the beginning of the song, you'll also reset some VSTi's to their first preset.

I know that's an old topic, but I've got that very issue... (presets come back to number one when i play the stuff I've recorded.). So ron, have you sorted it out, or does anybody have a clue?

2. Select 'Insert Program change' then 'Remove all program change messages from this clip.
I believe that should do it. Now, whatever program your VST has when you save the edit should play on that clip.

Well, not really. But if I insert a program change for my edit, with the preset I want, that works.

depends.... with some of them (and only with the instruments, not the effects).
I've got this issue with mrray2, crystal, synth 1.... what's even weirder is that it keeps on coming back either to the 3rd, or the first preset, depending on the vst.
