For crowd sound in 'Lord of the Rings' they recorded the crowd at stadium cricket game during half time!

Hehehehe....I was Orc number 3,785: if you listen really carefully you probably won't be able to hear me quite distinctly. Oh...and the BlackCaps won, by the way. :hihi:

And I find Haematohm from OhmForce can be good for crowd or choir vocals...you have to really fine-tune the parameters, but it works well...it will give you a whole bunch of pitched voices in one go, as long as the pitch amount is only small.

I think cloneensemble would be too close for crowd noise - works great for choirs. You could try recording a whole bunch of spoken parts (radio talkback, news readers, interviews, whatever). Fly these into you DAW, loop, detune, mix, whatever - should make a good general crowd noise ... then record yourself shouting the name you want, mix detune a few times, and bring up the general crowd noise with a fader behind it just for beefing it up.
