My personal favorite bargain finds didn't happen in a pawn shop, but were fun nonetheless:

1) Roland MKS-50, found on eBay as some guy had two of them from 1985 when they first came out. One of them had a "bad display unit", so I put a bid on that thinking I could just use a sequencer to edit it. When I got it home, a week of no display working on it was buggin' me, so I opened it up, and what do know? The display wire inside was not plugged into the mainboard properly! Next thing you know, I have a new unit with a display that just started working for the very first time in 1999! :)

2) Found a Korg DVP-1 in the communal dumpster in front of my complex. So I took it inside, dusted it off, and plugged it in. It turned on, but would not function properly. So I took it to a shop down the street and paid a guy $50 to fix it. Apparently there were not many of these made, and it is still fetching $350+ on eBay!! :D

I still use both units fairly often...

Fantastic synth, and what a bargain price!

Check out my site for free patches and free (windoze) software for it: http://www.gwydi.com/jd800

Thanks for the link. You have a great site there. Yep, I always wanted one of these things. I still find it to be (along with the Wavestation) one of the best realizations of sample-playback synthesis. Dangerous, though. I have way too much work to do this weekend, and those sliders are just far too tempting!

On a related note, a friend of my was trolling yard sales last summer.

She told me that some old guy was selling "this old German microphone that looked like a lollipop." He claimed it worked, and was asking the princely sum of $50 for it.

Fearing "the worst," I e-mailed her a photo asking "Did it look like this?"

She anwered "Yes! Was it valuable?"

I could not bring myself to tell her that I recently saw one go for 4,533 USD.

Yes, 'course... Don't know if it really worked our not, but I'll never know now: she thought $50 was too much.

Hell, I would have paid $50 for it as a paperweight! :D

Great deal I must say.
I "had to" shell out about $150 back in 1986.
A pretty good deal that too.
It's still in my setup...
