FR: Keeping edits under control in projects view

Post

As a follow-on from Siddhu's earlier posting, I'd like to add a request for some way of keeping all the relevant audio and MIDI files from fragmenting in Projects view. For example, I'm working on a large (about an hour)composition for a community event and so far have accumulated 144 bits of audio and MIDI sketches, all of which are under several edits within one Project. Every time I record a new sketch and save the edit, that new piece gets added to the top of the Projects page rather than staying within the edit group that it belongs to. (Am I making sense?). As this project goes on I'm winding up in a terrible tangle. Maybe it's just that I'm still discovering all the ins and outs of Tracktion, but it seems a really untidy way of saving material and it doesn't seem any different in T2.
Is there some way to fix this?

i agree its pretty weird. You get used to it :P

its nice that the clip you just rendered is on top - you don't have to remember where you put it. To put it another way: however you organize your files in the file system - in folders etc - you can see what youve been doing in any given project all together organized by time.

However, when you save a changed edit it should move to the top of the list!! also perhaps a "next edit" keystoke to same aimless scrolling. Also perhaps an automatic enfoldering of older material like browsers so with history or some other way of putting away older stuff. Finally yes a heirarchical view option would be ok but I wouldn't want to see it *replace* the current system

I'm sure there's got to be a better way of organizing the project folder, too, but it's not all bad. It shouldn't really matter which edit a source clip began in, after all.

Say for example, I start all my projects with an edit called "initial edit" (which I do), and then I record a bunch of stuff in that edit, including a guitar part that sounded pretty good.

I decide it's time to start shuffling stuff around, so I make a new edit called "Reorganization #1" and start mucking around. As it turns out, I decide that I'm going to re-record the bass but keep the guitars and other parts for now. I make an edit called "Re-record the Bass #1" and come up with a bass line that I'm happy with. So then I make an edit called "Re-organization #2", and start shuffling around again.

Now, if the clips were listed per-edit, where would my guitar part go? It'd have to either be with its initial edit, or a ghosted 'listing' of it would have to appear with each and every edit, which we all know would be a horrible god-awful mess (and I know that's not the option you're selecting).

Now, "Re-organization #2" is my current 'main' edit because it's got all the parts I like, but since I didn't actually do any recording in it, there are no clips listed with it! So the proposed new method of organization wouldn't give me any more information than the current one already does.

Now, if a month passes and I've never even looked back at "Reorganizations #1-4" I might delete the edits (but not the clips, of course) from the project directory just to clean it up a bit. If clips were associated with edits in some way, NOW where would they go?

I think a more important thing to have is more flexible control over naming conventions, and to have the edit page exhibit a better 'memory'. For example, if I record something on a track called "Lead Guitar" and then move the clip into a "storage track" (a concept that we could happily wave goodbye to if we get folder tracks), and record a second clip in that track, they're BOTH called "Lead Guitar 1" which is kinda annoying.

Maybe all that's needed is some decent sort options for the window: ie by type: midi, wave, edit; by source; by name; and by time last modified; by time created...

Post

Er,

You can already do that.

You can? I don't see a date or time modified or created column anywhere, nor does that information show up for the individual edits in the project when they are highlighted. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some way to have that information displayed?

Now I am conused: The default seems to organize by creation time. Once you sort by say name how can you return to the default order? kl is right: it would be good to have access to the standard creation time and modification time sorts and info

I can't fault your logic, Lunch Money, but I'm still left with a problem. With so many clips in this project, I open it up after a few days and see an edit item named "cello" at the top of the page and have to scroll myself dizzy trying to find which edit it belongs to. And T won't let me drag it to where I want it if "where I want it" is below the screen (ie if I need to scroll to see it).
In the end I spent today archiving every edit and dumping each one into a separate new project. Now at least I can keep all relevant clips together. When I'm ready I can simply create a master project and assemble the whole thing. I've never had to work this way before, but now I've started I actually quite like it.
All your inputs were really interesting and useful, guys. Thanks a lot. And I do hope Jules or Beno or someone takes a look at this for future updates.

To sort, you just click the top indicator... for example, where it says, "name".

What I'm confused about, though, Toad, is what usefulness it is to you to know what edit the clip belonged to. Once I know that information, I might better be able to understand your need for an edit-based hierarchal sort.

:D

That would be great, if you could sort by date and time -- which is pretty much the only way I ever need to do it.

Post

Ahhhh.... right. Weird, I just assumed that there WOULD be a time indicator at the top, but when I open it up, there is none. :? That's strange-tastic. I guess if you change the naming convention to store the date first before the project and track names, you could use the sort-by-name function to accomplish the same task...

But that's a workaround.

Is this possible and if so how? I've looked in the User Guide and Reference guide, but...

And while we are on the subject, what's the purpose of the "Purpose" project property? Is it even editable? It just says "Normal project". Are there un-normal projects too?

I once asked about other operators, but nobody seemed to have a list for me. Luckily, there are a few core tags available with the default naming convention.

It's a bit unorthodox, as it's done on a per-input-device basis. Here's what you do:

1 - Click an input device
2 - you'll see a "filename" dialogue strip
3 - change the tags to whatever you'd rather use. For example:

%projectdir%\%date%_%edit%_%track%

This will store each track's filename as something like:

1May2005_Bass Recording_Jazz Bass 1

In the appropriate directory.

Cruddy part is that if the day of the month comes first, then when it's sorted, it'll come out like:

1May2005
2May2005
3Jan2005
4May2005

*sigh*

So, it's not really a solution, after all. Still, I guess it's good to let people know that they CAN change the file-naming convention at least. ;)
