Encouraging first attempts with Kompakt and DFD

So,,,,,
Though my RAM order came in incomplete - I ordered 2 GB sticks and received one, I loaded it in (so I'm at 1.25) and started loading samples.
With the Kompakt settings at the "high performance" preset, I loaded in the Full version of Scarbee Rhodes. Much to my surprise, it was close to flawless.
Even when holding down or pumping the sustain pedal and playing fast runs or forearm clusters, I couldn't max out the CPU. I could make Kompakt run out of voices - it was set to 64 - but I susbsequently changed that to 128. I haven't gone back and tried Scarbee agin with it set to 128. I will.....but for normal playing - no sweat.
I also loaded the Vintaudio Steinway upright with all sustain and release samples. Again, no problem.
I am going to purchase White Grand Jr. next, before taking a change on a larger Grand piano.
But given that I only have 1.25 Gigs of RAM loaded in, I haven't done any serious tweaking, and version 1.3 looks to improve on the performance - Receptor seems like a keeper for me!!!!
Note that I had the buffer set to 256. I could run some of the lite versions OK at 128. 256 is definitely playable feel wise. 128 is better...I'm hoping to be able to do that with some of the larger libraries in the future. I could see switching buffer values depending on the sound and on the material....

Hi Phil,

Interesting that there's such a huge difference between 128 and 256! I didn't try it on my gig last night (was running to late to risk it), but I'll try tonight - looking forward to it!

Boog.

P.S. I'll have a look at the settings ;-)

Hi Phil,

You're quite right, in that there aren't any CPU spikes or overloads at 256. Unfortunately, for me, 256 isn't a comfortable latency to play piano at. I tried it tonight, but it just doesn't feel natural. When playing jazz, or funk, or most other comping styles, I don't mind as much, but when I'm playing chordal piano (rock, easy listening, etc) it just doesn't feel right. I'm going to have to wait until the 1.3 update and see if I can get everything going at 128 smoothly.

I agree....
I can get some stuff to happen at 128 already though. The Steinway Upright by Vintaudio works well - the 12 V Lite version of the Scarbee Rhodes works, and
White Grand Jr. by Sampletekk works at 128 as well.
THe Full Scarbee ALMOST wroks, but I can "break it" if I try.
Also, I'm still at 1.25 G of RAM and when I have 2, I hope for things to be more solid.
I'm putting my money (literally) on the Muse folks to iron some of this out with 1.3.

Hmmmm....

I have 2 gig of the highest quality RAM, and I'm still not convinced. Roll on, 1.3!!

After playing more....I get the results I spoke of above when I boot receptor -
go into "EDIT" on the Gui, and load the samples into Kompakt. In actual use, things aren't as good. Kompakt sometimes "loses" samples when loading large instruments - prompts for a search, and is "blind" to the folders.
When used in standalone, calling presets, there is more of a tendancy for CPU spikes and 128 becomes unusable for most of the instruments I was discussing.

So yeah....roll on 1.3...and I hope the rest of my RAM shows up!!!!
