Morelia, yes, mate, I do live on KI but I'm the only toad here. As far as I know cane toads haven't reached South Australia - yet.[/quote]

No toads here in WA (yet). Expecting the invasion to start somewhere after 2007. Hey, I might even end up with some in my back yard. Don't think they will reach SA any time soon. Check out the predictions here:

(Yeah, I know its seriosly off-topic, but might help folks figure out what the hell we're talking about...)

Back on topic, I like the MIDI controller mappings in T2. Midi editing is better, but still needs some work. Also, I presume that T1 will not be further developed, so with T2 you are investing in a product with a future (ie. expect bug fixes and incremental addition of useful features). Some of the bundled plugins look neat too. Sure, many of them are already free but I'd probably look at buying BS-1 anyway so to have that thrown in is a good thing for me.

Ultimately it's going to come down to a battle of prudence over lust.

If that answer was directed at me. We use Euros which are roughly higher than american Dollars. I have no idea how Australian $ compare to American ones, but it sounded like a lot of money  .
Actually any money is a lot of money to us working class dudes with a family and a home loan :?
Oh well. I`ll wait and see how things develop.

I studied for 6 months in Perth last spring (or fall over there anyways). Nice city. Got to love that neverending blue sky.

Hmmm - the new features in T2 aren't really enough to make me want to fork out a load of loot to upgrade, as far as I can see. The loop recording would be nice, I guess, but that's really the only thing I can find in the demo that's significant. The plugins are irrelevant to me anyway, as I have the full set of Waves plugins, plus a few others that I've bought over the last couple of years, like Antares Autotune. (My voice normally sounds like a dying cow with udder-ache...) Now it sounds the same but in tune! ;)

Toad - the canetoads up here are surviving too well, but I gather that people are being encouraged to practice their golf swings on them... Don't think we'll ever get rid of them - they have to be one of the most unloved creatures on this planet. They have absolutely no saving graces that I can think of.

OK - I'll keep lurking on this thread, and wait for the upgrade price to be announced by Mackie, before deciding to upgrade - or not :)

Wow, I've left the thread for a couple of days and there are cane toads all over the place :)
OK...since we're still waiting on our ADSL to be connected I haven't had the chance to try out T2. However, I do aim to, but reports I've had from other experienced users signal a note of caution. There are some unresolved bugs from T1 appearing in T2 apparently.
I hope for a lite online version for download, but the expected price tag seems a touch too hefty for me at the moment which is a pity.

Now...since there are so many Aussies here...why don't we all get together and compile some sort of special Aussie artists CD ?
Just a thought....(I'm on no sleep !)

hey,

stupid american here. i really hate that you guys have to pay that kind of money for things. it seems so strange. is it all related to getting it to the island? i mean, you'd think there weren't that many troubles getting things to austrailian ports.

...ill bet it has something to do with all that open water and sea pirates. seriously.

i just don't understand why things have to go up so high just because it was austrailia. whatever. isn't most everything made in the world, made in indonesia or one of those funky stinky islands to the east of you anyway? why wouldn't they just send it over from the factory?

jesus!

almost twice as much for a fuckin CD with some data on it is ridiculus. im callin my senator! and my aunt grabel. she'll get it ironed out for ya!

sheeeeit! im pissed now!

I think for some products there may be an extra tier of marketting, and they add in their own margins. For example, the local music retailer buys from an importer/distributor who buys from the manufacturer. Presumably with the size of your market in the US, the middle man is not part of the equation. But I think the manufacturers know this, and they adjust the retail prices accordingly.

For example, if I look at "Musicians Friend" I can get Cubase SE for $99. 1 Australian dollar buys about 78 US cents, so based on that the local price should be $126. In fact the going rate is between $240 and $260. If I buy on-line from Steinberg the price is $257, so even though they are selling direct, they are not undercutting their distributors. Guess they have to do that to keep them happy. Anyway, if you work out the cost ratio its about 2 times the US price. In my experience the same factor seems to apply for many other products, including music/audio hardware.

Another example: in the US, a basic iPod mini costs (RRP) $US199. The local price is $AU299. Based on the exchange rate, the local price should be about $255. In this case the markup is about 17 percent, but its not clear to me why this difference exists. The price is mandated by Apple, and the retailers buy direct from them... :?

If there's a reason for this, I'd love someone to explain it. Perhaps it just comes down to opportunity. If they can get away with it, they'll try it on... In any case, the margin is usually so high that it is easily outweighed by the cost of postage from the US.
