Not in the last 20 years. What I am far more likely to say is "how can I make the stuff I already have do (insertmoderntechycreativewordyexplaination here)" and I can always find a way to achieve my aim. Its simply a matter of choosing the appropriate tool. I am 100% confident that with EnergyXT running inside ORION Platinum that I can achieve anything at all, given time, patience, thought and perseverance.

...well, I admire that...but don't you ever dream of what could be? :hyper: :)

I would also like to hear some music that didn't restrict every note to a power-of-two value. I would like to see any fractional value accepted as a legitimate note length. Things like 11/15th and 5/9th notes should be more common. :)

That said, I'm not sure if we absolutely need this flexibility, but I would certainly like to hear a few songs composed like this. It might turn out really interesting. This could be a rhythmic counterpart to the microtonal movement. :)

And, I have yet to hear an SE synth that didn't sound exactly like all the rest. I've downloaded dozens of them and created a few myself. It is a waste of time from my point of view.

Did you even read the initial post? Because it wasn't about synthesis methods, it was a very general, "I'm bored" kind of thing. Someone, typically, looking to be inspired by someone else's work rather than go looking for his own inspiration.

So tell me, why do we need a new type of synthesis? What benefits will it bring? How will it make our lives richer? And, while we're at it, which forms of synthesis do you think we've already explored to its limits? Because, just off the top of my hed, I can think of two of my favourite forms of sythesis that have hardly been explored at all. There are a few Phase Distortion softsynths around but even KORG never pursued its AI synthesis beyond a single generation of instruments. That's a real shame because I could do amazing things with my O1R/W that I have never been able to do since.
Yeah, i read it, re-read it before i posted, and just read it again. _Now_ I get what your point and the arguement is. I'm not saying we need a new type of synthesis. I haven't explored the limits of anything, never claimed to.

When the original poster said ...
I'm thinking there really hasn't been anything ground breaking or earth shattering come along in the vst world for a while... There really isn't anything that changes the way we look at music/sound lately though... any rumours out there??? There must be something really cool on the horizon...
....I took it to mean new synthesis methods. I read the thread through to that point just to see if someone would say "yeah so an so figured out this totally new thing..." my mistake. I was just curious, wasn't going to run out and jump on the next train to Trendy Town. I agreed when you said something along the lines of "use Synth Edit and build your own". I couldn't agree more. I have yet to use any vst. I've used Max when it was out of Ircam before it was released, we had it at school (i cna't even remember who first distributed it/only used the midi version). I didn't go too deep into, like say, algorhythmic composition, but you don't really have to, just make the tools you want/need. That's the beauty of that stuff. When I got my Nord Micro Modular I never once thought "man, I can't play this patch poly, no more cpu left, this shit sucks" I was so just so happy to have the freedom, I think of it as this giant modular I could never afford before. I'm excited to have access to all the inexpensive vst available. I was actually quite happy with my studio as it stands, but my computers are so old (macs) I can't run any new software. I'm bulding a pc and i'm kind of poking around hear, researching, adding my ignorant two bits. I just haven't read such heated "discussions"
since Analogue Heaven. Is that still around?

Anyway, I still like to read about new synthesis methods... (insert obligitory  )

Thanks for posting that! I think it's very interesting.

From your description, I might have thought it would have sounded a bit "chaotic" or "forced", but it sounds very natural to me.

I have and use what others have built. I'm not ashamed that I can't code but I would like to take to the next level. Between what `Rene puts out and everything else that's available what is possible now is so over the top for me at least I'm in heaven. I started with a mini moog, arp omni, Fender rodes and a 4 track open reel analog recorder TEAC A3340S. While this was some time back in the stone age I never imagined what it would come to now. What can't we do is the question. There seems little left and yet I know the surfaced is just scratched. This does keep me young anticipating what's next 8) that and having fun with what I've got.

How about a signal processing VST that automatically transmutes any meaningless crap into a mind-boggling display of talent, insight, and universally appealing heart-felt emotion? :D

What about one that transmutes lead into gold? That might actually be easier!

Okay, let's be more realistic. What about a plugin that "simply" writes some terrific lyrics for you?

Even among the areas where software has already made some progress, there is still room for improvement:

Noise reduction (that doesn't harm the desired sound)

Synthetic Vocalists (remember Yamaha's attempt?)

Re-Synthesis (some very nice things so far, but still room for improvement)

Having a computer fill in for a live player, and letting you intelligently "jam" with it in real time. (I mean where you play one part, and the computer plays an intelligent second part simultaneously.) There are some systems that attempt this, but they have plenty of room to grow.

I'm sure I could think of lots more, if I wanted to take the time.

I'm not sure I understand the question fully. Do you mean that 4/4 is limitless, or that drum machine grids don't limit you?

Here's a highlight of the Guru grid:

Image

So for 5/4, I want 5 slots per measure. I also want to be able to deftly handle having one 4 slot measure followed by a 5 slot measure. I also want to be able to work with polyrhythms, so that one voice has a 4 slotted grid and the other is a 5 slotted grid, etc. I also want to be able to work effectively with triplets..
Guru lets you slave engines 2-8 with any polymetric.

So you can have what appears as 4 steps take place in the time of 1..2...3.. basically any polymetric you choose.

Combine this with pattern-length being any length per-pattern, repeats (one step containing 2x, 3x, 4x etc repeats of the step...for easy 32nds and glitch repeats)..

and theres many more unique abilities.. don't let the simple look of GURU fool you :)

I think this is part of shamann's issue. The GUI doesn't immediately indicate the actual duration of each note.

I'm just going by your description. I've not used the program myself, but it sounds slightly awkward to me.

 While I'm not knocking those Ideas I was thinking along the lines of practical application. Such as `Rene's new Dimension synth. Could Wave guide be considered resynthesis? I think so but the term is highly technical or at least the description is anyway.

Databending is a newish way of aquiring sounds and/or textures.
Abusing wav2midi applications is big fun.
The combination is... interesting.
