what's pro tools?

It's not free but there is a version of pro tools for m-audio hardware which I don't think is too expensive. I think it is sometimes bundled with the maudio hardware.

However, I have tried the demo and uninstalled it the next day. It's nothing special

It's the system most widely used professional studios, basically... it only works on Digidesign hardware (not M-Audio).

And yes, this would be one of the professional systems, that really is used by professionals. ;)

Incorrect- there is a ProTools LE version with M-Audio hardware available now.
For the full blown PT though, you'll still need Digidesign and an extra $7k burning a hole in your pocket...
