It's not free but there is a version of pro tools for m-audio hardware which I don't think is too expensive. I think it is sometimes bundled with the maudio hardware.
However, I have tried the demo and uninstalled it the next day. It's nothing special

whats the fuzz about protools anyway? is it the 'pro' in the name that appeals?

It's the system most widely used professional studios, basically... it only works on Digidesign hardware (not M-Audio).
And yes, this would be one of the professional systems, that really is used by professionals.

For the full blown PT though, you'll still need Digidesign and an extra $7k burning a hole in your pocket...
