Can an edit have mixed sample rates?

I am not in a position where I can test or check this out... anyone know? (48k and 96k)

not sure what you mean exactly.. i presume you mean for VST processing? you can load audio files of any sample rate and they're automatically played back at the correct rate. if you want to export the final mix you can choose the desired sample rate there. you're not fixed to a single sample rate for anything except what it processes at, which is only for playback/render/freeze i believe; the effects and instruments however would be running at the selected rate. how and why would you want multiple rates? which tracks would be running at which rate?

I can simultaneously record 24 tracks at 44.1/48k but my gear will only allow me to record 4 tracks at a time at 96k. Thought I would do my tracking in 48k and overdubs in 96k.

you can certainly change the sample rate before recording at a different rate, though it will probably require restarting the drivers.
