Now...since there are so many Aussies here...why don't we all get together and compile some sort of special Aussie artists CD ?
Just a thought....(I'm on no sleep !)

Steve
Count me in, Steve. You want to be the collection man?
Cool. No worries.
Well then, what I'll do in the next couple of days is to re open a discussion board I had setup for my old business...we can discuss all the particulars there. If anybody else is interested, just send me a PM and I'll give out the link.
If not, then I guess it's me an' Toad !

Well...we have like the highest income taxes in the world too...well 4th atleast.

Darned!!!!!
Wife and I were thinking about moving out of Europe and were considering either USA or Australia. I guess now we will not
On the other hand. Australia is one of the countries were people lead better lives. Isn´t it?
Germ :D
I wouldn't worry too much about the whole income taxes thing. Australia has a great standard of living (at least here in Adelaide). I've lived in the US too, so I'm not completely clueless.
I guess better lives is all subjective though. There's still plenty of open space here.

OT political rant - sorry!

what matters is not the level of taxation but on the value per tax dollar rendered by the government. When the government offers social insurance, education and health care then what is to be measured is what those services are worth vs what they cost, individually and collectively. If (as is the case here in the US) you spend the bulk of your tax dollars on debt service, weaponry, prisons, and jet fuel well then....

From my view, that's total bollocks.

Well, would you mind sharing the reason for your view? It would be nice to have the assertion substantiated in some manner.
Perhaps you live in Sydney?

Open space sounds good to me!
I used to live in South America and had a big house and all right next to the beach on one side and the tropical forest on the other. Too bad political and social things turned out for the worst suddenly and we just had to leave the country.
I guess I will drop by the Australian consulate again and se what they have to offer. :) Moving by yourself is one thing. Moving with a wife and 2 kids is something totally different and complex.

Heh, maybe !
I was referring to geographic space really. Australia, because of scarcity of water can't support an overabundance of people anyway.

But the Australian goverment is always looking for people to move over there!
They give out lots of help to families wanting to move over if you qualify for their search criteria.

True. By overabundance, I mean, many more than we have now. Opinion is divided on the matter, but many environmental experts believe that even current water shortages in some areas would be unbearable should we ever have to support say, double what we have now. Australia is an extremely ancient landmass. Most of the country is arid and not farmer friendly. The green areas are where our capital cities are. The centre of Australia, while magically eerie, is basically desert land. That's unlimke the US where large portions of the continent are arable and fertile.

I have lived in a couple of different places. Some with percieved space, and Brisbane. I just thought the statement about open spaces in conjunction with the idea of having more people in Australia gave the impression that there was plenty more space for people. You seem to be aware that this is simply not true so I am sorry if it seemed like a rude comment aimed at you. I work in the environmental field and to me the belief held by many that Australia is a place with lots of space and is simply an insult to those desperately trying to manage our f**ked up environment on a pathetic amount of money we get from the government. 3rd highest rate of clearing in the developed world and highest rate of mammal extinction in the world. That's what we have achieved with our current population. Plus millions spent on weed and feral animal control and this doesn't even scratch the surface of the pest problem. It is little more than a bandaid to keep the crops coming and the parklands pretty. I could rant on for hours but I won't as this is not the place. But you did ask.

Again, sorry if I wrote my response a little hastely. I had just gotten home from work where I had to deal with the residents of the beautiful banks of the Brisbane River who see their back fence as a dumping ground :x :x :x.

That's fair enough Morelia. Yes, all good points. There's been so much devastation of resources like topsoil from overfarming (or so I believe)...and with the main population centres of Australia restricted to small green belts near the coast, I think it's a misconception by a lot of foreign countries that we have all this space to fill up. Yes there's space, as you say...but unless you want to live in the middle and deal with drought conditions year in and out...well, I'm sure everyone gets the idea.
Australia...lovely place. Huge continent. The green areas are lovely (at least in SA). The beaches are top notch. But people space? Not exactly. At least not for high density settlement.
This is all rather OT isn't it?
