:-o i must agree to greg :-o :D

Well, I've tried the GDI21. The results were good, actually, though I didn't perk up and go "crap, this is the holy grail!" I found that regardless of whatever tone I dialed in on the unit, it needed compression to sound any good.

Consequently, while I am enjoying the unit so far, I think that some creative use of free VST will still get you pretty much in the same ballpark. The GDI21 (dunno about the bass-specific model) won't give you instant satisfaction, either-- EQ and compression are still needed.

i have had the tech 21 for 8 years..same box. I love it, but even that I EQ and compress. There is no really magical sound that won't need any EQ or comp, but w/ the tech 21, getting the bass to sit in the mix is a lot easier.I als don't have to do use much compression or EQ, just enough to get it right.

It's true. Bass without compression is like rice without white. (wait.. you can get non-white rice...) And for someone serious about recording, EVERYTHING should be EQ'd or at least carefully analyzed to determine if it needs it or not.

So although I would like a magic box, I guess I have to accept that this sound engineering stuff is WORK! ;)

I am a bass player with a 1972 Fender P Bass equipped with Seymour Duncan P pickup - I can't remember model but it is very like the original but with better definition throughout the spectrum. I also have a SD Musicman at the bridge. The Musicman is active and the "P" is originally passive but I have wired it through the Musicman active. Some great sounds. Interesting to note that the Musicman I use live almost solely but prefer the P sound (or a blend) in the studio. I also use a Tech 21 original Sans Amp with a Fender styled setting prior to the DI.

My studio setup generally would be to use a mix of DI and speaker sounds. I use Sennheiser 421's on the 15" speaker and also one of the 10" speakers. Depending on what I'm trying to achieve I find a mix of the 10" and DI work best for me. I don't tend to use too much 15" as it just gets a little muddy. One big thing though is the DI you use. I was using a Boss DI-1 for years and had no problems until I bought the Valvotronics tube DI. This thing is amazing and just blows away any other billy basic DI I have ever used. Highly recommended.

There may be occasions when I simply record a DI track (such as late at night) and then reamp the signal back through my bass rig (during the day when people won't get upset) for micing. This works fine but you probably would need to synch the miced tracks to the DI track afterwards to keep the tracks "tight" with each other.

On more than a few occasions I have recorded using just my Valvotronics and then dropped Amplitube into the track. You don't even need to dial anything in. Whatever the default setting for Amplitube is it works extremely well just placing it on the track.

Oh and by the way I go from the Valvo usually into my TL Audio C1 but with only a hint of compression.

Cheers

Thanks a bunch for all your excellent advice... I spent some time last night trying a whole bunch of different things with the ideas provided and I have come up with something that is quite workable and will give me flexibility looking forward.

Great stuff... Thanks again...
