Most sound-on-sound effects usually require some dry sound, so post-fade send is adequate. Also, most developers are smart enough to include wet and dry level or balance controls.
Yes.
That's quite an very easy code to create a "mix" or "dry/wet" mechanism inside a plugin (basicla one or two lines of code).

Necessary for most "insert" effects. But not (usually) necessary for "send" effects. Cause thats even the sense of a "send" bus system.

Althought, to setup a special VST plugin for this, probably requires the same amount of time as to setup a send and bus system that way (and an professional host application, of course).

Seriously, I'm new as hell to Energyxt, but I'm sure it must be simple to knock up something like this, and from what I've seen, running eXT with simple audio controls (no VST's), it doesn't inherently use a noticeable amount of CPU.

I say this because now you've brought it up, it's raised a good point. It can be done using 2 controls simulutaneously (one way: set send as pre-fade, control send level amount inverse to track level), but what a pain. Definitely for live work, fiddling, demo'ing, etc. a dedicated Dry/FX crossfade would be tight.

hey, it's just vector work in tracktion. i got the free traction and abandoned muzys. t1 pisses me off sometimes with little things that are easily fixed, but it seems to be a great prog next to hearsay of others

Post

Yeah, Traktion does it, you're right. But like someone mentioned earlier, it's certainly not reason enough to switch hosts.

And I know all about switching right now, slowly migrating from Logic 5 to SX3. The pain!

i too feel that this should be available without having to use sends... I mean, if anyone wants it as an insert, then it is wanted as an insert, regardless of whether same can be achieved using sends or not. what's there to argue...? :p

I think it's a cool idea, especially as you usually can't solo the just the "wet" part of an FX Channel in Cubase. Or an insert, for that matter. :(

Good call ... is this really not possible at all? I'm on SX3 now, and it's the same as before from what I can tell. You solo an FX return and you get all tracks that are sending to that channel (plus the wet effect), rather than the 100% effected signal. Hmm ... methinks some experimentation is in order ...

... Regarding the posters desire to crossfade between dry/wet - I also do not know of any available plugin - however, I do this by using(wait for it) the sends A/B in Live-4, and crossfade between them 100% dry - 100% wet. simple.

best.

Post

yeah, I could easily build it in any of the modular jobbies I"ve got, but it wouldn't be very efficient.

all I want it to do cross fade between wet/dry signals in a channel in Live, for performance. I don't see why the device would need more than two inputs, I'm generating all the noise I need inside.

SickleCell316 - far too complicated. all I need is the normal dry in (l/r) which is then fed to 'loaded' effect, and one twiddly knob on the front which slides between wet and dry.
sounds like you should combine your thing with platinumears' IQ4 to randomly eq your 4 channels.

Post

der_gary, you've lost me. I cannot see a way of doing this in Live as I would need to assign one midi controller to two objects, which most hosts do NOT like, barring PlogueBidule. afaik.
thanks tho

Exactly!
nope - not at all - using sends is a totally different thing - you simply need a host like Tracktion or eXT which both offer this feature! ;-)

Post

thanks jens, it's a shame Tracktion and eXT don't have the same live remixing capabilities as Ableton's Live.

maybe I should take a look at SE and SM to see if I can make my own crossfading device..

Post

actually eXT offers fantastic live capabilities! :-D 8) When did you check it for the last time?

Post

to be honest I've never even downloaded the demo of eXT and I'm making a huge assumption about the differences in functionality between the two products, but for the time being I'm sticking with Live and it's scene selection.
