I see about nine boxes for clip colors, and it kind of limits the visual contrast between different clips.
Is there more variation in clip coloration, like a pop up color picker or something?

There use to be a color slider with 1000's of color possibilities in T1. But it quickly turned projects into a rainbow hodgepodge. It was too hard to match a certain color exactly if you needed it. I'm glad its gone. The T2 way is faster IHMO. Theres no pop up picker that I know of.

For me it's enough.
The way I use it now, is to separate instrument types: Red for the "hot" rhythm section (drums and bass tracks), blue for keys, light brown (orange) for guitars and strings because wood is light brown, and green for synths (because aliens are green - or whatever). For vocals I use pink (because they are generated by the body). To me, this makes sense. :D
With this system I have a better grasp of the setup of my "virtual band" and I immediately see which group of track effects I can probably use on the track. When I open an edit, I can immediately see what types of instruments are in there, and where they are. I work parallel with recordings of different songs and in each Tracktion edit I grouped the instruments the same way; it helps. In addition I group the track from bottom to top: The rhythm section is always sitting at the bottom of all the track rows, above it is the guitars (and strings if any), then above that come the keys (and synths if any), and then at the top of the track rows is the lead (vocals or lead melody instrument).

9 colorz is enuff for me :-)
