T1 Noob: Compressing files?!?

Forgive my ignorance, but I just got T1 recently. I briefly searched the forums here (wasn't in T2 manual either nor could I find the T1 manual online), but maybe wasn't searching the right phrases as I got no results so...

...when I switch projects or load from scratch I get that dimmed screen with progress bar that says "preparing to play from compressed or networked files".

Is Tracktion really compressing my audio files? If so, why? Sonically that just wouldn't make sense to me at all so that can't be right. I have no network drives mounted... no external drives attached so it couldn't be networked.

I'm guessing/hoping this is just Tracktion's way of saying.. hang on dude we're getting your audio clips/tracks together and it may take a second. :)

Anyway, thanks for any info/tips. Loving T1 so far!

I never use compressed files, but I'd guess that what Tracktion is doing is converting them to an uncompressed format - which would make a lot more sense.

You really should avoid using files which are compressed - they will never give you the best quality.

If you save an edit as an archive, you are given the option of compressing the files with OGG (either Vorbis for lossy, or FLAC for lossless). The demo projects included with T come archived to save space on the download.

You're probably loading the example songs, which are compressed.

Thank you all for the replies so far. Let me be more clear about what's happening. There are no demo songs as I got rid of those. I am not saving to archive nor am I using any compressed imported audio clips.

I am seeing the "preparing to play compressed or networked files" simply trying to load my own projects. All of my projects are live recorded tracks. No midi or anything else just straight feeds off our Beringher board. That's why I ask if maybe it's just T1's way of saying it's loading my audio files?

Regardless I'll be upgrading to T2 in a few days so hopefully this will just go away. Maybe I need a faster computer (1ghz G4 Pbook with 1.25GB RAM) or HD (5400rpm). Anyway, thanks again for the comments. :)

Did you upgrade to 10.4? Because there is a wav file bug that will give you that same message.

Indeed I am using 10.4. Hrm... we'll see if T2 has the same behavior. It's certainly not a show stopper, but when the band I"m in is tracking like mad I switch projects a LOT so those delayed seconds do add up. I'm so noob though I didn't even know T1 stores audio as WAV.... curious. Thanks for the info Braj. Good karma headed your way. :)

So I managed to get some screenshots of what's happening. Whenever I load a local project this is what I see. I recently went to add an audio clip to a track and it said that it was a networked file though, as you can see, the path is simply to my home directory on my local hard drive.

So I'm thinking this is an OS issue maybe though I'm not sure how to solve it. Why would Tracktion think a local file is not actually local?

are you using a mac? if so your problem may be related to the one detailed in this thread :

I'm not Mac, so there might be some sort of quirky problem I'm not aware of. But on the PC, this only happens when exactly what it says on the tin is happening.

Ie. if the source file is in a network folder or removable media.
