Another Midi-sync issue

Msascha,

I'm no expert, but from what I can tell, and from other folks that I have talked to, it seems that the Tracktion GUI (specifically with Mac users) is somehow is competing for the same resources that are involved with the midi i/o and therefore disrupting the timing. It doesn't take much to completely F up a groove. The only workaround (if you can call it that) is to zoom all the way out so the screen doesn't have to redraw while playing, initiate the midi playback and sit tight without touching anything until the playback is finished. Not acceptable for any real work. Too bad.

I have had similar problems (not with MIDI clock as I don't use it - though I'd say that before valley jumps on me :D ) with external MIDI - screen redraws can (but not always) bugger up the note timing, both T1 and T2.

I'm upgrading my music PC today (if the bits arrive) and I'll play around with PCI/AGP latency to see if I can make it go away.

oh great, another thread where 'oldies' jump on 'newbies' for asking legitimate questions.

Hey, I'm an oldie, and I'm jumping on nobody!

Similar problems here with Tracktion2 (registered) midi clock. Very unreliable, not usable in my setup (Alesis A6, Korg ER-1, EA-1)

With Live 4 everything is rock solid, very tight timing driving the sequencers and arpegs in all my hardware devices (even with 'sucky' midi-clock). Unfortunately have to give up on T2 for now :-(

p.s. Live 4 has pretty decent midi, even supports aftertouch (still waiting for that in T2)

Rich, nothing to do with you- you had similar problems to the original poster! and you weren't talking about high horses.

Me again...

Yesterday evening I tried T2 and Ableton Live! again to make sure my MIDIClock issues with T2 were not the result of my upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 or something alike.

Results:

Ableton Live! - rock solid (as MIDIClock master, providing MIDIClock to 4 Electribes, 1 DX200 and 1 Regelwerk)
Tracktion (with no clips on any track, just pure empty playback and MIDIClock output) - very shaky and unreliable

I think I wasted the $20 for the upgrade. T2 is totally unusable for me at this point in time as I work nearly exclusively with external sequencers which need to be "guided" by the sync master device. So I'm back with Ableton Live! - maybe T3 will be able to send reliable MIDIClock information. This applies only to Tracktion on the Mac; don't know if the Windows version might be able to do it right.

I'll check out the windows version in the next couple of days. I wanted to sync up my trusty DR-660 drum machine for programming beats :) .

I'm wondering if it is something that snuck in relatively recently - I used external gear quite a bit about a year ago and had no particular problem (other than MIDI disappear completely from time to time, but that was most likely due to a crap card), but then went mainly software and it was only last week I started to use an external synth again and found the two issues of screen updates buggering up MIDI output and also the random output of All Notes Off and Controller Reset.

How did you use midigear about a year ago? T1 didn't support midisync.

You don't need to use sync per se to playback a sequence using external midi gear for sounds, do you? Midi information in the sequencer triggers the sounds on the devices...tempo and timing comes from the software.

@customdigi

You're absolutely right. One only needs MIDIClock for external sequencers, arpeggiators and alike... For pure MIDI sequencing MIDIClock is totally unnecessary.

Post

Indeed, I was talking just external MIDI triggering, y'know... Note On and Note Off etc - timing of that can get buggered too! :)
