A great EQ.
And a great compressor.
Unless your mix is totally fubared, these two tools should handle better than 90% of any mastering job worth attempting in the first place.
yeah this is probably true, something i came to the conclusion about this year.

but im going to give a cliche'd response to the original question and answer that the most 2 important tools are your ears and your heart.

we are lucky to get to experiment with different effects i know for a while in history people had to purchase hardware effects and they learned how to use them really well. but if you play with an effect and you hear a significant improvement in the sound on a variety of soundsystems, then you are free to add more to your chain than just an EQ and Compressor.

I have found that the instrument sounds I use in Sonic Synth 2 and Sampletank are really high quality and have great DSP with them so my tracks need less effects on the master chain - always start with great sounds and then your mastering process is easier!

well maybe someone like kilroy can help us and decide what's the best way to do this. after going through some of the Vestman mastering articles on his site im thinking about digital signal degration even more. he states that he doesnt like the bouncing function in today's sequencers.

Thanks kilroy! I see this makes sense and all the exciter stuff just tempts me do overdo it and ruin the mix.
But which ones? Not for a commercial artist but just for hobby work. The EQ I can work easiest with is LPGEQ2 (download) linear graphic EQ, and the compressor I like is the Kjaerhus classic but I am looking at the T-Sledge

Well, I'm predominently a hardware guy for mastering, so I'm probably not the best bloke to quiz on the software mastering front. Some on these other chaps could probably steer you in a good direction though.

I use the Waves compressors for certain mixing tasks, and I suppose one could make use of these in a casual mastering situation. Not free...and the PACE copy protection has the potential to mess some systems up...badly in some cases apparently.

I use the Waves C1 compressor for clinical work alot in mixing, where software processing is either more practical, or more convenient. I like the Waves Renaissance compressor as well, very different from the C1, and is capable of very smooth and deep compression...more colour and attitude, quite versatile when used and understood properly. As far as the Waves EQs go...well, I might cut with them...in a pinch...reluctantly...when presented with no better alternative. Good hardware is tough to beat. *cue BONES* :hihi:

You could demo some of the Voxengo stuff. Always seems to get good press round here. I have briefly messed round with their Gliss and Harmonic EQs and thought them quite serviceable. You should be able to do good work with something like these. They are different and complementary to one another.

I'd best let the other chaps chime in on the VST front of things. Wouldn't hurt me to take a bit of time and try some of the plugins this lot are always on about. :hihi:

Wow.. Mr. Tunes I just listened to your song "After Mile" on your web site. What a beautiful, beautiful mix! It seems to be so three-dimensional, open sounding, it fills the room and is brillant (made without an exiter?). And I really liked the vocals (Vocoder or even Melodyne on that?)
Sigh... you know, fancy little tools like that Spectralive thing give us hobby musicians the illusion that we can just plug that in and it sounds like... that.

Okay I will try those (still looking for an easy to use, effective combination of only *2* plugins though :D
Thank you for all these insights I appreciate. After these tips I will try and work with EQ and compressor for a while, trying to learn more... thanks again! :)

Thanks Crysonic for a better Spectralive :D (the stereo bug seems gone)

Coming back to the advice on what's really needed for mastering ("a great EQ and a great compressor"), I have meanwhile worked on the improvement of many mixes and learned that this is true. After changing my concept, all I use in the master bus is: MjMultiband Compressor, TLs Maximizer, and just a touch of Spectralive (but I found that it's not necessary when using multiband compressor - so now I mainly use Spectralive on individual tracks such as bass guitar).

Thanks for your help, I learned something! :-)

Hi

I must admit I really got cold feat after I bought this plug and then read the negative topics here on
KVR. The algoritm did however sound good to me no matter what development environment that was used. :)

Crysonic, keep up the good work!

It's maybe not the answer to all prayers, but it definitly lifts the sound quality if used with caution. :)

Would be cool if it used a bit less cpu.
Cheers Bob
