I've only tried freezing once and didn't pursue it.

Once the track is frozen, can you locate the "frozen" clip once you leave the edit, and use it in other things (like a rendered clip)?

I'm not sure but I think the track is only frozen while the edit is open. Valley???

No.

The frozen track is not quite like a render.

- If you freeze a number of tracks, they are all frozen into one single file - which reduces hard drive load.

- The freeze file is not in a standard wav file or aiff file format, so it couldn't be used elsewhere.

- I believe the freeze file is specifically tied to the tracks that it represents, but does not contain the vst plugin state, so even if you did copy and move it, the result would not be meaningful in another edit.

I've never closed an edit with frozen tracks in it. I just seem to recall reading somewhere that when you close the edit the freeze is no longer froze. Sorry

I can't recall off hand.

Memory suggests that the freezefile is lost when the edit is closed. I'm pretty sure when I used freeze, the frozen tracks would be restored (as in defrosted) next time I came to work on the edit (which always struck me as being wrong).

 Funniest thing I've heard all day. At least since one co-worker today suggested, of another co-worker, to "Go Pai Mei all over his ass."

I like the track freezing if you don't think you're done processing a track but you want to start overdubbing, etc. I think I'll start using it. Seems like a better way to preserve HD space, since you don't have to save both a raw clip and a rendered clip, you can just switch back and forth.

Tracktion keeps a running mix of all frozen tracks - no matter how many frozen tracks are added the total cost of all frozen tracks is the same as one audio track without effects. Which means there is no limit at all to how complex a mix you can do. So long as you don't mind waiting for the tracks to freeze ...

Great, sort of a temporary mixdown. It is slow, though. Just kick back and sip java. :D
