Exactly. Using an external keyboard & mouse + midi, and having the screen of the laptop closed, but having the image in 2 external monitors.

I've an old matrox G400 at home that's never let me down. Only 32Mb but everything runs fine DAW wise. Dirt cheap off ebay.
My Dell at work has a G550 and was a pig to install at first until the Mobo BIOS was updated... Works fine too though one or two apps (like Realplayer I think...) misbehave - video doesn't appear if the window is on the second display, drag it back to the primary screen and everything's fine.
