Questions about upgrading win98 > xp.

I'm a bit nervous about doing this because I am afraid that it may degrade my system performance.
I need some assurance and general advice.
Before you laugh about xp degrading win98 performance let me explain.
I am running T1 on a 500 mhz laptop with generic dx drivers. No asio.
I can get 10 - 15 ms latency even though people say that is impossible. I turn down the slider in the settings page when I want to record midi to 10 or 15 ms and it works. Sometimes I have to freeze some tracks, but it works.
I am afraid that there is something on my system that is allowing this to happen and that if I remove win98 and install xp and re-instal all of my software that the latency may be worse and become unusable.
I know I will never be able to re-install ALL of the soft ware I have ever put on the win 98 system as I don't have the Sonar 2 demo any longer and sometimes I think that installing that demo may have had something to do with the low latency (it installed wdm drivers(or whatever they are called)). Is that even possible.
Does anyone have any Ideas about this?
Is the low latency just a lucky accident because my Dell laptop just happens to have agreeable drivers?

Be afraid.
Ghost is your friend. Can you Ghost the drive before XP waddles in and crushes your poor little system? How much RAM does it have? Less than 512 and XP is sluggish. I'm facing the same plight. Super fast 98lite machine with a delicate ballet of T1 form and function. I've decided to wait and just get a new machine and XP. Unless Jules brings the unicows in from pasture. unicows.dll, the Unicode dll for us mono-lingual 98 users.
Good luck, but if it ain't broke etc...

I have XP loaded on an IBM PIII 600 notebook. I can get similar latency using a Tascam us122 and the tascam drivers but there is not much more I can do with it from there. I might be able to get 4 tracks without any kind of VSTs on it. If I want to add any type of effect I have to freeze. I had Win98 running prior and I had a little more room to do more but not much. XP will impact performance and having enough memory really beoms an issue.
I put together a dedicated daw machine using an amd processor and for about 500 bucks (less monitor) it does everything I need it to do without having to freeze tracks.

I can run over a dozen audio tracks and 4-5 tracks playing VSTi's with effects, depending, of course, on the effects and VSTi's.
And I DO get 10-15 ms latency.
maybe it's some kind of miracle machine.
Now I'm REALLY afraid to upgrade to xp.
JULES, I need that win 98 functionality!!!

If you want to keep your options open, use partition magic to split your drive up and dual-boot. Then, if all goes well with XP you can migrate gradually, but otherwise your 98 set-up is still intact.. you will need a fair bit of free drive space though: XP installs are somewhat larger than 98SE..

I'm in the same situation. I'm about decided to go ahead and buy T2 upgrade, but I won't be installing it until I get a new PC. So far, I can't see anything that requires a T2 install to actually get the registered T1 owner discount.

I'm waiting because I heard that you can only use the $20 upgrade once. Jules is working on code to make T2 work with win98 so I'm waiting to see if he is successful.rockstar_not wrote:I'm in the same situation. Most likely that would be released as T2.x of some flavor, which would likely be a free upgrade for registered T2 owners, download or boxed. Don't wait too long, the offer is only good until the end of July, if I'm not mistaken.PT wrote:I'm waiting because I heard that you can only use the $20 upgrade once. I thought the time-limited upgrade was only on the Full Boxed set discount coupon. At least at My Mackie that's what it says. If I lived in Woodinville, WA USA like all Tracktioneers.

I wish I did. It looks much nicer than Chicago around there...mandolarian wrote:If I lived in Woodinville, WA USA like all Tracktioneers.
