They're designed specifically for use with Ableton Live (2 of them) and Traktor (the third)
.
(given a good review and featured on cover of FM last month)
I think that the concept of highly customised hardware that integrates seemlessly with specific software is quite a good idea, and these Faderfox units are pretty inexpensive, too

Yes, they can... but I would think there would be better options for Tracktion (e.g. the evolution controllers?). As I understand it, the whole layout of the buttons/features on the faderfox boxes consciously mirrors the layout of Ableton Live/Traktor. If you were attracted to the layout of the faderfox controllers, I would guess you would be equally attracted to the software they match
Having said that, even though I am a Live convert, I don't plan to get these controllers. I'm very happy with my M-Audio Ozonic

What I am attracted to is the small size, the vertical format and the variety of controls: ie switches, faders, selector knob, knob, and joystick...

Yeah, they are very compact
If you look again at the design and check the back "footprint" - they are designed to sit ON TOP of your laptop keyboard

By the way, in the pictures your link goes to... the first one on the left is designed for "music production" in Live 4 (and comes closest to tempting me to parting with cash). As you say, a nice selection of different controls.
The second - in the middle - seems to me to be more useful for DJs using Live. The point of all the buttons is for launching clips and scenes in Live's session view.
The Third model is designed for Traktor, about which I know nothing. So I'll shut up there!
