For example, my former next door neighbor seemed like a reasonable person. He was actually far less annoying than the other neighbors. Then, one night he shot his wife, his mother-in-law, his mother-in-law's boyfriend, and he would have also shot his wife's boyfriend if he had only known that person was in the same building at the time.
Yes, we modern Americans don't generally engage in duels. Not only do we have people shot, but we sometimes do the shooting ourselves.
