I just got finished testing it with tracktion. First I optimized XP for audio by following the suggestions from the article tascam site (great articile BTW http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-428/W ... timize.pdf) Then after a couple hours of difficulty finally was able to install the US-428 (Norton was causing the computer to run really slow but once I uninstalled it it ran must faster.)
First I recorded 4 tracks at once with my US-428 with no problem. I eventually had 10 audio tracks playing with out the CPU or HD breaking a sweat. I had 2-3 filters on each track. I blown away by since it is only a 4200RPM HD. It appears I'll be able to get atleast 16 simultaneous audio tracks no problem. This will suite me fine for now.
I haven't tested any midi functionality yet though. I am anticipating that this won't be a cpu hog. I use outboard midi gear and will probably only use 1 or 2 VSTi's. So I think this may work out as an audio laptop (atleast for a year or so until I can justify spending a whole lot more money
