Multitimbral instruments in one track?

Hi

I've just downloaded T2 and I can see I'm still unable to playback multitimbral instrument in one track (i.e. play what has been already recorded) - MIDI IN channel is ignored during recording; I cannot set track's output channel to "any", still only selection between 1-16. Any cure for this?

I could split MIDI stream among tracks but in this case I have to load another instance of same instrument (in except for rewire device).

... and I cannot assign same MIDI input for multiple tracks. Sorry this does not attract me to purchase T2 yet (I'm used to use layers when playing), but as for editing Tracktion is number one, I hope these features will be added.

The Midi channel is set on a per-clip basis so yes, you have to have one track for each midi channel. But you don't need several instances of the multi-timbral instrument: Just put it in a rack - the basics are covered in chapter 5 of the T2 user's guide.

If you wire a rack with the midi in going straight to midi out, then drag copys of that same rack to other tracks, you can trigger 999,999,999,999 intruments at the same time. Just drag the rack to whatever track you want triggered.

Hi,

You can check this page

Midi channeliser allows you to change the midi out channel within a clip. Insert the plug before your instrument and use automation to change the output channel. It works fine.

Thanks, I will try racks. I would have nothing against the fact that channel layaut is supported by per-clip but the problem is that when I record more takes in same track they overlap and everything becomes unreadible. I'd see following solution: put takes with different channel on different subtracks.

But hey, here's other thing: the problem is that after I started T2 and went into edit I can hear periodical whitenoise fadein signal. OK, just kidding :D

The real problem is: I use external sequencer(tracker) which is much more convenient step-sequencer than rollpiano. But there's no way to synchronize ext. seq with Tracktion sequencer (MIDI Start/Stop commands sent on start/stop transport buttons). In other words - no sync device support.

:?: Which host that you know of offers workaround-free sync support with an external tracker? It's all a bit out of my realm of experience, to be honest with you, but I've only heard of people syncing up software with ReWire.

It's possible that there could be some sort of workaround devised, using utilities such as MIDI Ox/MIDI Yoke; however, that would require an investment of time and energy. You'd have to convince Tracktion that your software was actually a hardware device, and you'd have to make sure they're using compatible timecodes, no?

why not get a VST tracker, such as SKALE tracker?
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

This sounds very encouraging but sorry I can't understand the logic - let me explain on example: I create rack and connect MIDIIN straight to MIDIOUT within the rack. Assume I have my MIDIIN port, let's call it "X" (the one which I want to split among other tracks) selected for track1 - so I put the rack in track1's filters section and it should work with no problem for track1 (i.e. X is routed to MIDIOUT of filter section) but when I use same rack for track2 where example "Y" MIDIIN port is selected then the routing is Y -> MIDIOUT not X -> MIDIOUT. Sorry I could miss something, I'm new to Tracktion. Anyway I will try work on this, maybe I will find out something.

yeah, right. Skale. But it's still fairly unfeatured (btw. there's yet other solution - Buzz) and I prefer IT-like editor (zt) rather than FT (Skale).

Best regards.

Exactly thru MIDI vcable - this is when I tried Cubase - it has possibility to set ext. sync device (as well as Cakewalk as I know) - so I set ztracker in sync mode to act as slave (Cubase was master) and used one MIDI vcable between Cubase and zt - not a much effort needed in fact. Worked very good but Cubase is not my choice.

sounds very good but it might be very hard to follow events and change channel by automation (in order to split a clip in this way, say on 2 channels/instruments). I often need multiple channels simultaineously - eg. different instruments played dually on different octave - this scenario couldn't be solved by automation (only in case of events editor which btw. isn't included but still too time consuming).

Thank You,

I checked it. WOW! Illogical but really works! Enormous thanks! :)

Not illogical, really, though-- but still one of the only not-instantly-intuitive things about Tracktion. Copies of racks are exactly that-- not 'new clones', but rather shadows of the original. :D

If Cubase and vcable worked before, you should be able to do it with Tracktion, too. The only reason I can think of for it not working is that you have the master/slave relationship set up incorrectly, or your Tracker is using a type of timecode that Tracktion doesn't support yet.

I'm flying a bit on a wing and a prayer for this one, though-- just trying to hold down the fort until more knowledgable people appear. ;)

However I found a problem - the input is split on both tracks (by MIDI in channels - I have my keyboard split so righthand side is sent on 1st channel and leftside on 2nd channel) but only one track is recorded! (this one where MIDIIN is connected). So I back to original problem - playback is OK but I still cannot record different MIDI IN channels to different tracks. The result is that when I playback what I recorded I can hear only one instrument with notes merged from 2 tracks. I'm giving up - I will use more virtual MIDI inputs + ndc MIDINoteRangeFilter.

Yes but timecode is one thing (btw. is it sent to every MIDIOUT currently connected to any track?). What about MIDI start/stop commands? I connected one track to vcable MIDIOUT which I passed to MIDI monitor, then pressed start and stop buttons in Tracktion but I saw no activity in monitor.

Thanks to everyone for help
