That's not a very nice thing to say about Microsoft's most secure OS. If it was my friend, I'd tell him to dump his 'shitty' soundcard. But I doubt he would want to do that either.

But the SB drivers could still be hosed in the registry. Have him uninstall the SB drivers. Then boot in 'Safe' mode. Then run Device Mangler and see
if there other Sound drivers hanging around. Delete them if so. Reboot in normal mode and re-install the nasty SB drivers again.

He could also try the ASIO4ALL driver, not that he'd want to.

Well
1 You really should be running the KX project drivers for a SB if possible (No SBs aren't shit for an average noodler and there is a lot of bullshit hype elitism surrounding that here at KVR - Take no notice whatsoever, I recorded two albums on a SB live that where both released and had no complaints from Loud mastering - Music is about music not all the other crap too many people worry about, If a label likes your music but the quality is crap they will get you to remake it in a better studio paid for by them)

2 Win 98 isn't MS's most stable OS by a long long way but the KVRists would have you believe this (You are right not them its shitty, 16-32 bit dynamic switching my ass - Fred and barneys OS) , Remember if somebody doesn't know how to set an OS up it's the OS's fault :)

3 An install of T can be done straight over the original and will just update the program, It wont loose any tracks and so on but it is worth backin em up first just in case (Although i have built up so much trust in Jules i never have and i've never lost an edit)

You may also find it useful to check out the hacked EMU APS drivers aswell, Some people prefer the interface to KX project, These only run in 98 although very unstable hacks do exist for 2000 (They are extremly unstable and as far as i know where dropped in favour of KX)

ASIO 4 All would be OK as long as you have tried KX first because this is designed specifically for SBs.

Oh you dont need to boot into safe mode to see if there are any dodgy drivers, Device manager should tell you what is going on in normal mode, This is a simple case of crap drivers from Creative (As usual) but that is no fault of the hardware itself and this is why you can get a heavily supported set of third party drivers (KX Project), Safe mode is only really needed if you are trying to bypass a recovery system which in this case you will not have to worry about :)
Hope that was some use :)

Nu is correct. Especially the Kx Drivers. Works fine for me. Live Platinum never dies. Lose 98 if possible XP is much nicer all around.

I
I'm running Tracktion on an old Win98SE box, AMD 1.2 GHz, 256 MB Ram, SBLive platinum, and KX project ASIO drivers.

Depending on the number of soft synths I use, I can go at 5.3 mS latency with about 10 tracks before things start to break up and I overload the CPU and/or memory.

SBLive cards, with the right drivers, are just fine for starter cards considering you can get them now for $30 at Wal-Mart.

I've entered the KVR audio monthly contest 3 months now, and I've placed in the top 1/2 first month, top 1/3 last two times I entered.

Not a single person who reviewed the tracks (granted they are 128 kbps mp3 encoded files) said "Jeez, you must use that kid's toy SB Live card - your trax suck" or anything even close to that.

Listen for yourself: www.soundclick.com/scottlake

I'm a 1-track-at-a-time hack, why should I spend any more money on my card? I've got the platinum version which has all the I/O I need right on the front of the case.

In any regard, I don't believe it's Tracktion's fault that the SBLive card went missing. I've never had an issue of compatibility of the two.

Who at KVR would recommend 98 over XP? :nutter:

I agree that the SB is fine for noodling. The main reason I switched was so that I woudln't have to dick around with things like kx drivers. They work fine and aren't THAT tricky, but when you consider the weird resolution SB uses, the $99 US for an Audiophile eventually seemed like real bargain.

Not elitism-- just saying that life got much more convenient when I switched to the Audiophile.

Greg,

With the platinum version that I have, I've got headphone outlet right on the front of the PC - Audiophile - well, I need to go invest in a small mixer or headphone amp to listen to my cueing tracks while I record new tracks - it's not just a $99 investment.

Actually I'm looking at getting an Edirol UA-25 for the next box - so I have similar I/O (well better with balanced I/O) with my SBLive, but I can also put T on my Dad's zippy Dell and do some remote stuff should I want to do that.

Still well worth it though: everything will sound better! A Hi-Fi buff might spend that much on a pair of cables to go from his CD player to his amp.. :hihi:

Scott,

It'll be more of an investment if you also haven't bought a mixer yet, you're right.

Actually, going waaaaay back, and to prove that I am not 'against' SB cards-- I had the Live Value, which did NOT feature a break-out box and my case didn't have front connectors. I took an old drive bay spacer, drilled it out for some jacks, and then physically fed the wires through the case and out the back of the case, in effect making my own break-out box. Even had a 1/4" jack on the front panel so that I could plug my guitar right in. :D

That meant using the onboard pre-amps, though, which I think DOES compromise the sound quality. The Line In is pretty decent on an SB but the mic in is garbage. For an unprocessed track you can probably get away with it, but it was murder on anything that used high-gain distortion. My amp-simmed guitar parts were nasty to deal with.

Absolutely not, no way.

I go direct from my mic preamp; which has a nice low noise floor - to the line in RCA jacks on my SBLive card.

You can't tell me that putting a low $$ mixer, which has inherent self noise, in series in between, wouldn't introduce more noise - plus the fact that I'd have to watch the mixer's EQ settings on each track, etc. etc. More analog gear in the signal chain is not necessarily a good thing.

Sorry, but I can't agree with you here. Somethings might sound better, but there is a good chance most will sound worse. I will grant that going into a Balanced I/O might be a better setup - which the Audiophile does have.

I just don't need to haul a mixer around or clutter my desk with one when I won't use it.
