that's just wrong, Greg! :wink:
He's not wrong from what I remember. Maybe things have changed since the Yamaha thing but updates used to take months, even with HUGE show stopping bugs.

Come on:

the only paid updates are always the full-version-numbers afaik (i.e. SX2->SX3) and while it might be true that the contain fixes for bugs that were already in previous versions (dunno about that but at least I know that Jules did this for T2) they always introduce a myriad of new features and goodies.

I challenge you to give me just one single example where Steinberg asked the users to pay just for bug-fixes!

Steinberg have released versions 2.2 of Cubase SL/SX and Nuendo. These are free maintenance updates but in addition to several standard maintenance fixes and changes, these versions also introduces new and improved hardware controller support, as well as three brand-new virtual instruments and effects!

All are now available online as free software updates from Pinnacle's FTP server. The SL 2.2 version includes the same new features and fixes with the exception of the additional plug-ins, which are exclusive to Cubase SX and Nuendo.

New Features:

* Support for Mackie Control Extender.
* Improved Generic Remote implementation.
* New option "Use System Timestamp" in DirectMusic Setup improves MIDI timing for DirectMusic devices
* New virtual instrument: Monologue [screenshot] – monophonic analog modelling synthesizer based on physical modeling technology.
* New virtual instrument: Embracer [screenshot] – surround-capable polyphonic pad synthesizer
* New VST effects plugin: Tonic [screenshot] – analog modelling multimode filter based on the filter design of the Monologue monophonic synthesizer.
* Various minor product enhancements (see version history for details)

Fixes:

* Fixed: Recording on many audio tracks simultaneously using the Punch In / Punch Out at locators leads to inaccurate file lengths.
* VSTi channels appearing at wrong places in the mixer and arrangement at seemingly random occasions, sometimes even disappearing altogether or being converted into a kind of shadow tracks, grayed out tracks that are not routed to anything anymore, can be deleted but can’t be tweaked and are basically useless. This may happen if VSTi inserted by skipping slots and if VSTi are removed, which are not the last one.
* VST Instruments connected via VST System link: VST System link does not allow MIDI note auditioning from an MIDI editor: Any note selected within an editor will drone. It appears note off are not being issued. - fixed
* VST Instruments: In cases where multiple instances of the same plugin are present and the order of the plugins is being altered (e.g. by removing an instance from a lower slot number), on loading the project there, problems can occur: - wrong assignment of the VST Instruments - no connection to the automation. These problems have been fixed.
* Generic Remote: If all entries are deleted and another Remote-Setup is loaded, Nuendo/SX/SL may crash - this bug has been fixed now
* Occasional crossfade crackling – fixed

Monologue Key Features:

* 2 oscillators with sawtooth, square and triangle waveforms.
* Additional noise generator producing white noise.
* Two filters: high pass filter and versatile multimode filter.
* Single LFO.
* 4-stage ADSR mod and amp envelopes.
* Effects section with chorus, phaser, flanger, plus separate delay and overdrive units.
* X/Y matrix pad for additional realtime modulation with access to all Monologue parameters.

Embracer Key Features:

* Polyphonic surround pad synthesizer.
* 2 oscillators with 12 waveforms.
* Independent envelope and tone controls.
* Stereo and surround outputs.
* Up to 32 voices of polyphony per instance.
* Dynamic width control for exciting 3D sounds.
* Unique “eye” controller for simultaneous tone and width control.
* Full MIDI control implementation.

Tonic Key Features:

* Dynamic multimode analog modeling filter (mono/stereo).
* 24dB low pass, 18 dB low pass, 12 dB low pass, 6 dB low pass, 12 dB band pass and 12 dB high pass modes.
* Adjustable drive and resonance up to self-oscillation.
* Envelope follower for dynamic filter control with an audio signal.
* Audio and MIDI trigger modes.
* Powerful step LFO with smoothing and morphing.
* X/Y matrix pad for additional realtime modulation with access to all Tonic parameters.

You're right about that. But you cant deny that bug fixes took FOREVER with the first SX versions. So Greg is only half wrong.

So your post should read, "Half of THAT is just wrong Greg" ;)

I think there are of course other factors as well that are often not considered. This forum is about audio. Jorgen definately seems very focused on making eXT fantastic. I think jules tends to paint in broader strokes. There have been consistant updates to JUCE.. and while juce might not interest people here (because it's not directly related to sequencers and audio), it is in fact the backbone of Tracktion... meanwhile, it provides a vastly in depth and truely x-platform framework (Linux, Windows, OSX) from which a ton of applications can be created. The depth of the framework by itself it astonishing. People are not going to appreciate that here... nevertheless, it is the core of tracktion.. and has powerful implications for it's future. I think what you see in JUCE are very low level changes that will ultimately effect Tracktion in a positive light. But it's simply going to take longer before you see the direct results. Jules isn't just creating a sequencer... he's creating something much bigger than that. :wink:

yeah mod ... there are more than a few (even - gasp - some non-coders) who see glimpses of where jules might be heading ...

Thats really great for him. Hope it works out well.

But I didn't buy a development environment or whatever, I bought a sequencer. Maybe that should be given a bit of priority too?

I'd recommend eXT. :D :hihi:

Been using the standalone version continually for a week now, and I'm loving it! There's a bit of a learning curve but the Beginners Pack gets you up and going quickly! :D

I'll always love Tracktion, don't get me wrong.. but it's just lacking some features that, while not showstoppers, began to grate on my nerves.. and once I got eXT to use as a plugin, I had to try standalone.. and that's where I stayed!

I imagine Tracktion will evolve into something amazing and/or have offshoot products that are amazing but.. erm.. I need a sequencer with better organizational features now that I'm layering and mixing lots of audio tracks from my external hardware. I love putting tracks in folders! I love ghost clips! :love: :love:

Sorry to rant, but that just had to come out. :cry:

I didn't buy anything from someone named Jules. I did business with a company called Mackie. Blaming Mackies inability to fix serious showstopping bugs on a busy person is just plain silly.
