OK that's a cool visual - It makes me think (in a cartoonish sort of way) about Punch & Pumping in compression (assuming the finger comes back to normal size again like in a cartoon).

Here's another one - stick your band members heads in a vise and squeeze each one until they are small enough to fit in the particular picture frame you have in mind. It can also help if you EQ their noses and ears first... :D

high attack, low release values.. slap that on all your channels and you're good to go. try lowering your master volume before you do this though..

Well after all the suggestions of free compression and trying them out I realised that I hardly need a commercial one. Even though they obviously should be better quality. I bought Voxformer just now so with that and some freebies I should be alright. The only thing I can think of now is some sort of tube emulation. I am not really sure what I want but in the demo softawre I have tried (Warmifier in particular) I have found some added sonic flavour that I really like. Is there any way I can get something similar to this. Unfortunately it must come as a free plugin due to my recent (and probably last for a while) purchase?

You serious? I've been using compressors for years, and I don't have a clue WTF that thing does. I tried. I tried to understand...
It just splits the dynamic range into different regions, with seperate processing for each. I've made something similar in Synthedit, though I couldn't get the graphics as flashy.. ;)
Yeah, you know, I love these guys' products...but I still find it bizarre. I guess it's just not how I like to think of compression - but I'll try to spend more time with it; Eqium and Firium are two of the(if not THE) best VST EQ's ever, so they must have figured something useful here. But I was a little underwhelmed with Finis too...

I use Ruby Tube (free), it adds a nice bit of high end edge, and works as a limiter, as well (ok, all distortion is a form of limiting, but you know what I'm saying...)

I forgot about Ruby Tube. Thanks for the reminder.

All bollocks basically

You wouldn't even have to do that with a lead guitarist or a vocalist.

so are compressors and for example tl_pocket limiter ways to help removing that alwfull "noises" we get when we really need to put the song a few levels up??
It sounds like you're recording with your input levels set too low. Try increasing the gain on your inputs. Keep increasing it until your inputs overload. Increasing your signals level result in increased SNR (signal to noise ratio.

Could I trouble someone to explain what the difference is between:

A compressor
A soft clipper
A maximizer
A limiter

All this techno-babble sometimes gets in the way of actually making music, no?

Analogue or digital – which is better? There's only one way to find out... FI-I-IGHT!!!

yep use blockfish and also try camelphatfree it can do some neat boosty stuff, also check out stardust for a multiband one, pretty cool stuff.

A compressor is an automatic volume control.

A soft clipper is a distortion effect.

A limiter is a compressor with a ratio higher than about 10:1

A maximizer is a "brickwall" limiter with a ratio of infinity:1 usually achieved by using a lookahead delay. These are usually used as the last processor before the dither in a mastering chain (some include dither though).

make sure to also check the free buzzcomp bundle. imo its the best freeware beneath blockfish and endorphin. actually to me it's better than most of the commercial stuff. crunchessor is a good alround solution thogh and it is easy to adjust.
