Round two unqualified reviews

markleford - broken

I can't imagine a sound which better matches the lyrics. Spot on.

Richie Bee - Child of the 80's

Man, those synth horns are very 80's. The arp layers in the background are too cool for 80's though.

farlukar - oiiftm

Don't really know much about this style of music - not qualified to critique it - I just know that I don't know how to make it. I do recall hearing this kind of stuff thumping out of nearly every boy-racer car while spending 6 weeks or so in Sweden in 2000.

glooper - hometown

The break at 1:10 - perfect attention grabber. Nice intro/outro as well.

eman8ions - waves break below me

Again, not familiar with this style.

Shane Sanders - Tower of Babel

....waiting for the song to bust loose - it seems like it wants to.....

Gregjazz - Four Flavors of Guitar

0:00-0:30 flavor 1, generic crunch
0:30-0:54 flavor 2, satch
0:54-1:10 flavor 3, namesake guitar
1:10-1:50 flavor 4, a little high landrons-Eric Johnson

There you have it, 4 flavors, aptly named tune.

Patrick 9 - Sunshine

nice bit of cheeky pop. Interesting rendition of probably the 2nd most used chord progression of all time, the I, VImin, IV, V

Astanine - Baby

Looking for a VW commercial home. Just add 'da da da'.

sttjelle - Sunday

Big surprise here - expected another big orchestral arrangement and instead got a nice Cliff Richard - at least that's what I hear.

remco - future bride

had to turn up the volume a bit to get all of the instrumentation - the slightly tense strings in the back; I was straining to hear them and when I did it made the song much more intersting.

hovmod - record deal

You don't really feel that way do you hovmod? I wouldn't mind at least trying a deal to see if this is the way it made me feel in the end; figuratively of course.

techbot - copyright this

flipping through the music channels on our 500+ channel digital cable now are we? My favorite part - Rock Me Amadeus.

plunge - tabasco

Might want to re-name to comply with contest rules. Cool organ vibe - me likes very much.

respirator - Biggest Hit

Yeah, who wants dollars these days? Very funny reference to KVR stars Donkey T and Beardedone.

Lady J - Mr. Rightnow

I liked this track, but the vocals hint like the whole track was put through a tempo stretch algorithm to speed it up to fit it into 2 minutes, but the fade out says no.

guido scognamiglio - noisy town

The supreme ruler of free vsti and killer drum soundfonts shows up with a very strong track. This one is my fave so far. Where is the clav from Guido - have you been hiding one on us? Bass is tight as well.

donkey Tugger - Timberlake

dt shows he can compose stuff other than killer indie-pop.

katanaman - an open letter to the man

punk doesn't show up here often, but katanaman has it.

barnadine - love strikes

What a refreshing mix of sounds. I love the sweet vocals on top of Jimmy Eat World guitars, and then the banjo - brilliant. Terribly hopeless lyrics - glad the little break was there to keep the smile going with the instruction to keep going.

m'snah aka hansm - popstar

liked this one but the claps wore on me. The choral stuff at the intro and outro hint at Mr. Bean.

mchlwlsn - Jongleur

Might want to change the tags to reflect your artist name. I would like to hear this one again with less depth on the chorus on the guitar. Playing sounds pretty precise, but the deep modulation on the chorus makes it seems less so.

scamme - obviousjunetic

I would have liked some variation on the bass line and the cicada like lead - like that guitar at the end- drop that here and there throughout the track.

ixox - the road to a 25,000,000$ deal

Sounds like a sad and tragic road to travel.

Knockman Wildchurch - The Contract

Creepy thoughts, yet majestically composed. Surely you could score some soundtrack work with stuff like this.

DJ Paulie Phonick vs John Cage 4'33"

My computer is too loud - thanks for pointing that out.

pheeleep - dreaming

Cool chill-out song.

Woj - Eight

I liked the rising warbly guitar at about 0:55.

vitaminD - midnight is a destination

Can't comment here from a liking/disliking standpoint. VitaminD seems to always feel it necessary to defend his style, but it seems like he is pretty good at it.

Andreas E - Melrock

A track that seems to want to bust out with some drop-D crunch guitars.

Khepira - Let Yourself Be Free

The vocals here and there keep this interesting, as do the little breaks, reverse sections, etc. Nicely done.

Wopelka - MC Wopelka

So this is what rapping sounds like in French.

You - Athens

A little bit in the 'Americana' style for you KVR folks in case you haven't heard it before. I would buy this if it was released. Would fit in nicely with my Guster and Grandaddy CDs.

Alex James - Slow Down Jackie

Leonard Cohen meets 60's TV show theme. The only thing I would change is to drop the ride cymbal during the tom runs.

Peppy197 - Power Peanuts

Just where did the title for the track come from?

beardedone - It's a Deal

Master of the interesting lead interval beardedone strikes again.

:) thanks rockstar_not. trouble is i can't create to order, i never know what's happening - usually i just randomly hit a chord, or a couple of notes, see what my mind thinks could follow on, and so on until finally there's a track that i somehow managed to write :? . perhaps the soundtrack to my own biopic?

Thanks for all the reviews. :)

Yes! :D I mean, no! :D I mean, well, maybe, but also a celebration of the grubbier side of love. After a week listening to commercial radio, I was getting a bit tired of hearing about love as this anaemic and idealised whippet full of oceans and stars and ethereal foreverness. Real love gets its hands dirty. Hooray! :hihi:

Hehe - I don't know what to say. Thanks for the literary criticism? This isn't really a review of the song, is it?

But like I said in my review of Loser, when the words are in your face, they take your focus away from the music. That's why I usually prefer songs with meaningless words, or a language I don't understand (Sigur Ros has a huge advantage there). Only the most accomplished poets can get away with a song lyric, and there's only one Tom Waits...

Anyway, I don't really feel like this about record deals (well, maybe... Frank Zappa has conditioned me to be cautious), and this isn't really my style of music either. I just thought I'd try to stand out in a month where I expected a lot of RnB and HipHop. :D

Hey Rockstar_not! Thanks buddy! :D

I have been remiss in checking out the entries. I will do so this weekend.

I am out and about so much lately that I have not had time to download much less even consider reviewing.

I should get one of those MP3 player what'sits. My car only has a cassette play and I no longer have a working tape recorder. But I just squirreled a bunch of cash into Vegas 6 + DVD so I will have to find my discman ..... ramble ramble ramble..

As with the comments you made 20 or so pages back on my tune, your words require pause and reflection - albeit in a much different manner. I had to stop and think about if I or any fellow KVRian would feel this way about a record deal.

I will give you high marks for 'standing out' amongst other entries. RnB it's not!! 8)

Hold on! This just made my week. As I wascasually listening to the entries here at work, along comes Respirator singing that he's going to be a star and the he will be bigger than me and DonkeyTugger. Whoa! :o :? 8) :hihi:  :help: :ud: . Just for the record :Thanks Thomas for considering me to be a star in the same calibre as Mr. Tugger!

SO may your pool (??indoors, right as you live in Denmark) overflow with Euros and your party gatherings be stimulating and warm - maybe you can get DonkeyTugger to play live.... :D

Cheers,
Gordon

Gordon,

FYI, back in 2000, I spent an entire day in Vejle DK, sunny all day - so I can vouch that there is at least one place in DK where the sun shines for extended periods of time. Actually, it was a couple of days - the other day we were there we took the kiddies to, you guessed it, nearby Legoland. It was mostly sunny that day as well. September 2000.

There was a festival going on that weekend called 'Vejle at night' or 'Vejle by night', and there was a killer band playing with a female bass player/lead singer. Kind of Cranberries sounding - very interesting stuff. I continually kick myself for not hanging around longer and getting the name of the band at least.

Thanks rockstar -
I am great believer in the KISS school of songwriting :)

I tried to keep it interesting with a double length (excuse my French) verse over the sequence.
