Aloha
does anyone have any experience with .wav to midi converters such as
http://www.digital-ear.com/digital-ear/wav-to-midi.asp

and using the midi output in traction

Also Guitar pro

http://www.guitar-pro.com

and Tabledit notation software

http://www.tabledit.com/

allow access to tabs from

http://www.mysongbook.com/

with over 41,000 tabs many complete multi-instrament scores of many popular songs and arrangments including drum tracks

these programs allow midi export of the tracks thus making possible the utilization of solos or other elements of well known songs as midi output

I use tabledit which I registered and after registration [fee $55]I got access to the utility program which converts guitar-pro tabs to tabledit format

I just havent yet got time to experiment with copping midi files into traction and wonder if any of you have either the time, inclination to attempt such
or prior experience with this

Mahalo

I wouldn't put too much faith in .wav to midi translation :) . You can usually get something out of a monophonic recording, but the moment any polyphony occurs, the software gets confused and that's usually the end of that.

Despite many manufacturers claims to the contrary, there is no software which will allow you to input a full recording (of a band, orchestra, or whatever) and generate a useable midi file.... and don't bother waiting for it, because it's tehnically impossible to do.

On another forum, I used to have a tagline which is worth repeating here;

Midi makes music, not vice versa

Aloha Graeme

And Mahalo for the reply

I found out about these programs on the mysongbook.com tutorial forum [which by the way has a series of post on music theory which are the best and most concise and understandable I have seen]

The forum comments were looking at wither it was ok to use .wav to midi conversions in order to tab any particular song for submission.

The answer was that it was an often-used technique but that to be usable the resulting converted .wav to midi to tab needed to be "cleaned up"

My curiosity is toward composition of new music via the manipulation of existing musical phrases developed in preexistent recordings and tabs

Seeing as there are those on this forum with much greater experience manipulating midi files in conjunction with .wav files it seems that this might be another useful technique similar to sampling that might be useful to those with greater traction and sequencing experience than I.

Your comment that .wav to midi conversion is not completely accurate echoes the remarks on the mysongbook.com forum

I respect your tagline "Midi makes music, not vice versa"

It reminds me that "notes are those special things musicians do between the silences" the quiet being as important as the notes the same way that the contrast between white paper and black ink is important in writing. In the blues and ska [and most other music] less is more.

That said a sample of a midi file generated from notation and tab files or from some .wav to midi conversion seems reasonable to be a source and tool in both crappy and clever manipulation of those in-between the silences.

It all depends on how much trouble it takes to “clean up” the resulting conversion

Again Mahalo for your reply
