btw. here in germany it only needs 1000 selling music cd's/week to be in the top ten
(and it's often bad music) who knows how many they are selling. this is completely without stating to all this.

Not that the charts are great elsewhere - they're not. But c'mon... Acid Oompahpah

And look whats no.1 - Reason! My beloved ACID 5 (but much reviled on KVR) sits just below T2. Above Cubase, Sonar and Live 4. Units shifted doesn't equal anything except popularity. Boy bands are popular and so is Burberry. I bet Dance Ejay out sells them all.

Absolutely. It's the bestmunchkin wrote:And look whats no.1 - Reason! My beloved ACID 5 (but much reviled on KVR) sits just below T2. Above Cubase, Sonar and Live 4. Dance eJay really is the DAW killer that's gonna knock Cubase etc out of the picture. The great thing is its so much easier to use than those bloatware packages
Charts are to do with release dates... when Live 5 comes out it will go straight in at number one. (Reason 3 and Tracktion are both out in the last couple of months, so of course they are selling well at present
Later in the year, Cubase SX4 and Sonar 5 will top the charts.
You just watch - these predictions are gonna come true and stun you yet

I'm not sure how they determine those metrics, it seems the numbers have changed a lot in the last day. I wonder what kind of volume they do on software. It could be huge, or it could be tiny.

One chart is definitely not the be-all, end-all, that's for sure. Still, consider:
For it to even BE on that chart means some level of exposure, market presence, and sales. All other factors out of the picture, this at least represents that Mackie are in fact getting the word AND the product out there.

I don't think that it takes many sales to change the chart though, Soundforge just came out of nowhere at #5.
This is like watching horse racing

Uhm yeah but it takes SOME sales. If its that easy to get on the list then whats up with the other products. They must not be selling anything at all. And who knows how long T's been on the list, I mean thats the first time I've looke at it and T2's been out for a while now.braj wrote:I don't think that it takes many sales to change the chart though, Soundforge just came out of nowhere at #5.

I was referring to how easily it changes, like it doesn't take many units sold to affect the list, and therefore it's like watching a horse race. And therefore somewhat interesting to check out. I wasn't saying that Tracktion isn't selling well.AD80 wrote:Uhm yeah but it takes SOME sales. If its that easy to get on the list then whats up with the other products. I'm guessing that the market for music software spread across retailers worldwide means that each outlet doesn't do a mass amount of sales each day. So if someone bought three copies of Band in a Box today, it could go to #1. Who knows?

I must admit that I would be fascinated to know just how many copies most of the various pieces of software actually do sell.AD80 wrote:They must not be selling anything at all.
When I worked for EMI Records I was astonished to see how many albums (especially niche classical stuff) sold less than 100 copies worldwide
There seem to be lots of viable sequencers out there now (not to mention all the other stuff flooding the market), and I wonder just how large the market really is.
It occurs to me that possibly the market might not be able to sustain the number of products out there at present, and that over, say the next five years, we might begin to see one or two of them disappear.

You are a very wise man. I have no particular insight on this, but I'd wager Microsoft will have a Garageband killer in the works (or more likely they'll buy someone). That's when the blood will flow.headquest wrote:It occurs to me that possibly the market might not be able to sustain the number of products out there at present, and that over, say the next five years, we might begin to see one or two of them disappear.
