Laptops work okay for live use as long as it is a robust, well made laptop. Your biggest problem will be damage to the laptop. That, and the obnoxious power supply isolation problem, but worst case that can be dealt with simply by running the laptop on batteries during the gig.

A recommendation: get a laptop with USB2 or Fireware and use an external USB/Firewire audio interface. Much more reliable than fragile pc cards.

I use a laptop every week during my live show and have found very few issues.

Not so much a realase date but what will be in it?
I seem to remember it wont run vst (thought some can run on Linux)

What's the problem with WinXP? If you want perfection, better look elsewhere. It doesn't exist in this dimension.

As it is, it is extremely rare that I have a problem with stability with my Carillon which now is over three years old. When I do have an issue with hosts (unless they are known issues with beta versions for example) it is the fault erroneous install or a poorly coded plugin. DAmn even my good guitar is pronre to be more unpredictable than my PC these days.

Just an idea but maybe we can have another thread with "Stable Vst+i for live use.

An idea for taking a back up copy of your hardrive can be enhanced by using a H.caddy.
Then its just a matter of turn off and swap catridges and reboot.

Reminds there was some good advice for live work in SOS a few months back.Great article. The one tip I remember is to take your setup somewhere else and rehearse.
Gets you used to quickly setting up and any other logistical nightmares that can happen on the road.
Oh and always bring two of everything.
Reminds me of a band I saw in the 80,s that used a drummachine. Only thry forgot to get fresh batterys for it so the whole set fell apart

Would be nice. But I know some Linux-users (experienced ones) who had terrible pains with it too. It's nonetheless great, but sometimes you have to wait ages until your soundcard is supported too if you can't code yourself.
Nonetheless, many vst-s already run under Linux I've been told (many not).

Definitely would be great if this came into life... I regretted my Soundforge-update deeply (expensive, buggy, many effects crash it which run without a fault in EXT) and am seriously interested to know more about Linux audio-programs.

Most of my Linux-friends tell me 90% of users are better off with XP or Mac though...

I use a laptop for my gig, which is just loading up a set of vst's and playing them from my controller. I was in the process of setting up xt, but loaned my newest laptop to my wife to take on her trip to vurtstock. can't wait to get it back. xp has been extremely reliable; my biggest problem has been remembering to plug the power cord back in between sets to charge the battery.

I play live in my band using my lappy and energyXT.

dont use the live setup yet as i'm still playing around with it. but anyway

This way i can play synths live (here its just polyiblit) with my midi keyboard and trigger samples using the QWERTY keyboard.

and using the tabs i can have a seperate page for plugin manipulation (UC-16 and the lappys pad thing)

I use a Creative Labs ZS Notebook PCMCIA card, which is excellent (really

) and work off the mains using a DI box with a grounding switch.

When i get round to doing my own solo stuff (

) I will be using the live mode as it looks soooo impressive i will be lost without it!!!

Strange i just finished a plug last night specifically for live use

On the issues of laptops mine has just returned after being back to the manufacturer for a new motherboard, I take it everywhere and it gigs everywhere

That has not been my experience at all. A good quality laptop should be more reliable than a tower because its actually designed to be transported. As for USB audio devices, my UA-20 was fantastic and my PCR-1 is every bit as good and both are 100% bulletproof with the latest drivers.

A rack-mounted PC for your live music setup only and a strong audio card seems like the go.

Don't forget, you'll also need to cart and set up a monitor. We went to Europe with my Shuttle only because I don't feel I can justify the expense of a laptop that can't also do my graphics work, putting a solution well out of my price-range. Organising and setting up monitors was a pain in the arse and carrying one was never a decent option.

Configuring a computer can be the life and death of performance I imagine. So what's a winning formula?

I don't do anything to my standard Windoze install apart from customise the colour scheme and I've never had any problems.

Pig's arse, they use MacOS because they've always used it and never question its suitability. KMFDM's Powerbooks are sufficiently reliable that they have two on stage in case one falls over. Add the pathetic CPU's they offer when compared to a PC laptop and you would have to be crazy to consider one.

BTW, I assume the new "Live" features are all geared towards dance music? i.e. Live arrangement tools rather than anything that makes it easier to use live in a more rock 'n' roll environment.
