and Lunch Money: MacAlpine has plenty of metal cred. You just have to go back in time a bit and listen to some of his earlier stuff like "Project:Driver".

You can take the man out of the 80's, but you can't take the 80's out of the man. - Paul Gilbert

That's so damn cool! :) Is he still drumming?
I also used to worship at the altar of Paul Gilbert, and never missed a chance to see Racer-X when they came to town.
They funny thing is my guitar teacher hated him. They were like bitter rivals. To be fair, my teacher could shred as good as him but he had this 'wholistic' approach to playing and loved the blues and jazz more than the rock/metal/shred thing. But Paul grew up about 10 miles from where i grew up, of course he is much older than me but it is amazing he came from the little backwater place hehe.
I was lucky enough to see a lot of the Shrapnel guitarists play live at one point or another, including Vinnie Moore, Becker/Freidman, MacAlpine, Howe, Michael Lee Firkins, Kotzen, etc... etc...
Wow, I've only seen Tony (but i got to chill at his HOUSE!) and Vinnie and Marty Friedman when he was with Megadeth.)
Did you ever get a chance to hear Vicious Rumors? Mark McGee is quite the shred monster, and replaced Vinnie Moore in that band, and the late Carl Albert is one of my favorite singers of all time, along with Russell Allen of Symphony-X and Jorn Lande of Masterplan and ARK.
Never got to see them but I got to see Symphony-X once. They opened for this very metal tour and got booed off the stage. Shame.

Tony MacAlpine is shred, and occasionally dabbles in tasteful fusion. He's hard rock at best, not metal.

Living Colour were not metal.

Fishbone are certainly NOT metal! They were diverse enough to have had one or two songs that teetered over the edge of metal, but metal they were not. Lady J's assessment as punk ska is at least closer!

Speaking of Lady J-- J, what do Evanescence have to do with Dream Theatre or King's X? The former is commercial hard rock; the latter two are kind of wankery prog-meets-hard-rock. They're from different eras, with different calibres of musicians, different lyricality, etc. etc. About the only thing they have in common is distorted guitars! To answer your question, though: I like quite a few Evanescence songs, but I'm not about to go out and buy their album.

I didn't say anything about Ron
Huh? No biggie. I may be getting old but I still get a huge thrill brushing shoulders monster talent.
I have a lot of respect for Vernon Reid and I was thinking how cool it is to know that I had been involved in forum exchanges with him.

Cheers,
Gordon

wonder if vernon looks at this forum? if so, i'd like to say, thanks for the inspiration and thanks for supporting mackie. we all look forward to hearing the new project and what comes of it with you using tracktion. i recommend using the waves plugins. it's a blessing to be able to use those marvelous plugs on such a simple and to the point host. the antares stuff is hard to get working without a dx to vst converter. i have yet to find one that will work with the antares stuff.
