Tracktion 1 not compatible with Win98? (according to Mackie)

Hi folks

A while back I downloaded the fully working free NFR release of Tracktion from the Mackie website. Its version 1.6. something.

The trouble is, it just hangs when I try to launch it. I emailed Mackie tech support and they said its not compatible with Win98

Strange thing is, I can get a slightly earlier demo release (v1.2 rather than the freebie 1.6) to run fine, but of course the demo expires after a few weeks.

Bummer!

I've replied to Mackie about this, poitng out that their website says Tracktion is compatible with Win98 (even on the page of the latest release, ie V 2). Alos, there are dozens of websites reviewing/distributing Tracktion that say its compatible with Win98 too

I can't wait to upgrade to XP, but its not an option yet. I'm close to finishing a three year project with my DAW and there's no way I'm upgrading my OS until its in all safely the bag.

Any ideas anyone? I'd love to get this version of Tracktion up and running. If I like it I'll probably upgrade to v2 when I upgrade my OS later in the year.

Thanks.

T1 is absolutely compatible with win98. T2 is not...yet.
I ran T1 on 2 win98 boxes for over a year. No problems.

Still running T1.6x on win98 - already bought T2 boxed, but it's still sitting in the box on the shelf until I get the new PC with new OS - been running T1 since August 04 on win98SE - pretty rock solid actually.

Interesting to see you guys getting it to work with Win98 - anyone have any suggestions why for me its just crashing when I try to run it?

It freezes on the purple screen with the brown tracktion logo.

I tried downloading the installer file again, just in case it was corrupted, but had the same problem.

check the Tracktion logfile. Most likely if it is crashing during start up then it is either an audio driver conflict, or a specific VST plugin that Tracktion doesn't like.

Wild guess here, but: Could it be that some plug-in is bringing up a dialog box when you start Tracktion, but the dialog is hidden under T's GUI? You might try using the Task Switcher (Alt-Tab) to see if something is waiting for you to click a button before Tracktion continues loading.

I've not had this happen in T but it does sometimes occur in other hosts so maybe it can help you too.

Is T1 still available online somewhere? If not, then you might be downloading T2 which is not compatible with Win98 as far as I know.

I think if you haven't upgraded to T2 your Mackie account still has the link for T1, no?

He says purple and brown screen, which certainly sounds like T1.

Thanks for your contributions, appreciated.

Valley: where is the Tracktion logfile located?

Rockstar: Yes, I am downloading v1.6 and yes I still have access to it via mymackie.com

Meffy: I doubt this is a plug-in issue, this is the first time I'm using Tracktion, and although I have another sequencer with plugins loaded into its own directory onmuy hard drive, I don't think that would be an issue. Ie I haven't told Tracktion where my plugins are yet, I haven't got that far - unless Tracktion automatically scans my drive for plug-ins when it loads for the first time?

In any case, I can't use the Task switcher as the system freezes completely - I have to use the PC reset button to re-boot.

What about the drivers? Do you have an alternate sound card with different drivers? This kind of lockup could also signal bad RAM, but other apps would probably have smacked into it before. Are you using Rewire?

Try a complete uninstall and re-install. Happy troubleshooting!

Just did a complete re-install the other day. I am using a Terratec DMX6 fire soundcard - there is an onboard soundcard but its disabled in the bios.

Not using rewire and I think my RAM is OK.

On win98/T1 the logfile should be in the "temporary" folder which itself is located in the tracktion install folder (c:\program files\tracktion\ usually).

It's a standard text file, so you can open it with notepad.
