The reason some people use Xian as shorthand is that, in Greek, the first letter of the the name Christ, is X. (xristos, er..essentially). The letter became a symbol for the Christian faith, in the underground during persecution. Conveniently, seminarians use it as shorthand for "Christ", as well as the Theta for God (Theos).
