Champagne is the name of the region in France where the champagne comes from. The word champagne on a bottle indicates that it is of true local Champagne origin. So it's not exactly one product that is protected, but a group of products of one kind from that region.
Same with every single regional cheese from Switzerland. Appenzeller is the name of a cheese. You might not know it if you're outside of Europe. Appenzell is the name of that region where it is from, they managed to protect it.
So the Aboriginees might be able to protect the instrument name and only didjeridoos made in Australia can be sold with the name didjeridoos. ;)

Yeah and the little village of Cheddar (not too many miles from me here) should really take ownership of its cheese name - not likely to happen but should if there is to be equality in such things

Champagne is not really a unique product, it's just sparkling wine. The type of product is produced in the whole world. Is Champagne any better? Well, for PR purposes it's definately better than any other sparkling wine. ;)
That said, an ethnic dijeridoo protection could not prevent a european to buy the instrument and sample it.

What do we learn from the discussion? We learn that
a) Sampletank is the best thing that could happen to a musician
b) Dijeridoo sample is coming up for ST2
c) cheese percussion of Squids smashing cheddar is not coming up AFAIK
d) samples of breaking champagne bottles and other champagne sounds could be musically interesting.

Although in a recent blind taste test the winner of the "Best Sparkling Wine in the World" award was (of all things) the one English entrant! I wish I'd had a bet on that one - I bet the odds were at least 100 to 1

:)

And the people living in the Alps that are not Swiss, that also do it.

I'd love to have a good didge sample.

I've used the sound in the past, but it was always sketchy samples with little flexibility.

Looking forward to a STRETCH'd sample.
