My father and my younger brother are huge fans of bluegrass. They like a little bit of country music, but bluegrass is by far their primary passion. The family home has been full of acoustic guitars, banjos, dobros, fiddles, and mandolins through the years. The topic of Bela Fleck came up one day (possibly the name was mentioned on TV.) My father hadn't heard of the name, and my brother had heard the music, but made some sort of mildly derogatory remark about jazz or something. :D

You see, they're hardcore hillbilly purists. I don't share any of their musical tastes, and certainly not their penchant for disparaging other styles of music.

I think I must have been tragically switched at birth with my parents' real eldest son. I keep thinking that somewhere there is an urbane millionare who loves rock and roll, with a bluegrass-loving belligerent hillbilly son, who hasn't a clue how that came to be.

McLilith: I don't hold with purism, but to each his/her/its own. :-) Thank goodness your tastes are more catholic (small "c"!!! :-D) than theirs. With broad interests often come a broad mind. (Evidence has been presented above that the inverse is true as well.) Narrow is boring.

Summary for those who just tuned in:

a: Theory is stupid.

b: People these days are too stupid to study theory.

c: People do know theory, but they ignore it to be artistically pure.

d: People don't need to know theory, and anyway it's racist.

e: Theory is not racist, it's just outmoded by various VST plugins.

There was also a great deal that defies summary because it is almost competely without content.

Oh, and Meffy is a dirty skunk.

Heavens, no. I'm a very clean skunk. You're right about the rest. I think. *dizzy*

Sorry to disappoint the little fellow, but I've a mate already, quite a good one. The best.

If he were to practice long and hard, he might make... oh, say, a halfway-useful doormat -- for someone with far looser standards than mine. *ponder* What's zuckerwatte up to these days? We might be able to make two people happy with one match-up!

I know theory like the back of Beethoven's hand. I can play anything, by anyone. And yet - my compositional skills are dire. I'm a musician, but would dearly love to be an artist.

And with that I decree that this argument is null and void, because it will go on forever.
