so why do business' use T1? and what is the fastest... not just home, but , like t1, t3, whatever (i assummed we had t1 at my old job, actually no idea) for the record, i was aware that cable modems are faster...just too expensive for me...also, the monthly price i pay is for 12 months and then it goes up, the sales gal i spoke to said i could switch to the faster dsl class (i have the 1.5 max download, they have the 3.0 max for $10 more)at like, say, month 11, make another 12 month committment, and then i'd get almost 2yrs. at the discount rate...i guess if you get a package from SBC with long distance/local/dsl/etc. you can still get a good rate, i've also read if you threaten to switch to comcast or whoever they may give you a break... because bottom line is THEY'LL SQUEEZE EVERY PENNY OUT OF YOU THEY CAN!!! anyway, as rudimentary as my questions/observations/opinions are, bottom line: all the info i'm getting from this forum is greatly helping this 42 yo. never-been f**k out, i'm able to demo/download all the cool apps (plus freebies) i've read about for years, and i'm listening to Can, Eno, Suicide, Yo la Tengo, Nick Drake, Massive Attack, Fugazi, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, etc, and i don't have to settle with the crappy local radio ANYMORE (at home anyway)..now i gotta get a cheap laptop or one of those fm transmitter dealies....ahhh, The Velvet Underground...
thanks to all for everything,
rg

the way I understand it is that T1 is basically a dedicated run telephone cable. each cable is full of 56k wires that can either all be used to get yer ~ 1.54megabit or split in any number of ways. Some companies use half the bandwidth for telecom, and the other half for data, some use 1/4 of the bandwidth for telecom and the rest for data, etc etc. T1 was the "fastest" that was reasonable for a very long time, and until recently 1.54 Megabit was fast as hell for networking.(and synchronous bandwidth was the same up or down) now with fiber connections, OC3, T3, etc etc T1 is simply just an expensive way to get broadband, in fact many remote sites where I work dumped T1 service for business class cable modems(sync bandwidth ~2mb) and save about 700 bucks per month. T1 can run up to 750-1000 bucks per month in some areas..
I got 8mbit (512k upstream) from ukonline recently after being on 1mb for a few years. Woosh! . ADSL2+ (up to 24mbit) should be around in the not too distant future too, so at LAST Britain is not just catching up, but surpassing most of the scandinavians and americans that we've despised so much for their speedy connections.
Rule Britannia! (until Sweden get 100mbit for about £0.30 a month)
the SBC Yahoo stuff seems to have a really good "radio" system, to me anyway... there might be other, cooler ways for it to work... forgive me if i'm naive about this, i'm just into it for two days now...they let you pick artists/songs, rate them, and that becomes your "personal radio station"...you can select someone else's station, rate the songs/artists/albums and that becomes part of your rotation... it kind of works but i keep getting script errors through Explorer (Yahoo has a "skin" over it with additional functions)... i called sbc and they said it would be a problem with yahoo....understandable, but i don't feel like spending money on a call even...it got me so happy so quick, now the reality is setting in: computer's aren't perfect...
too tired to go on with this, i'll pick it up tomorrow...
