Highly Impressed with Tracktion

I have been using sequencers for 20 years since the days of stienberg pro 24 on Amiga then progressed to cubase and cakewalk.
I have to say, from a song writing point of view, tracktion 2 is a fantastic tool. It really lets me work in the way I want - its very intuative.
The little pop ups that say (you cant hear sound because no midi device is plugged in etc) are such a simple yet brilliant idea that have already saved me time. Its the first time i worked with music software and didnt feel 'frustrated' at some point.
And even better I can just keep adding tracks it never gets clippy on my laptop.
It's fantastic for audio.
What is also fantastic is that it doesnt intefere with my general sound setup. When I use cubase everyhting gets routed through my asio driver whereas tracktion keeps it all seperate and routes itself through the asio driver without any impact on the os. This is also great because flicking between cubase and other apps caused crahses/bugs/issues but flicking between tracktion and other apps is perfect for me on my laptop.
I even had a 30 track audio song running while having skype conversation and msn and email etc.
Not all perfect though. I think they need a re think on how to deal with midi editing. In this instance I think they should break the no new window rule.
What (I think) should happen is for any midi clip that I click on to be opened in a new widow and auto zoomed in. With play buttons etc.
I find it very clunky having to keep zooming in to grid edit in detail. Because as far as I can see the only way to do it is right click and drag the song out.
Its also weird because you really have to zoom in a lot to see the same amount of lines that you see in cubase/cakewalk grid edit.
However, that said, I am LOVING tracktion. It is an amazing tool.
This is my first test using it this w/e...

It's work in progress and only got vocals up to first chorus (but incorrect lyrics). and its 5bpm to slow - so Im gonna have to record it all again.
Cheers,
JV

T rules but you are wrong about one thing
Steiberg Pro 24 was (And still is here) on C64 not Amiga, Steinberg never supported the Amiga and went straight to the Atari because of built in MIDI hardware

Great minds think alike.
Totally agree about the MIDI clip editing. It's the only part of Tracktion that still doesn't feel... "immediate". There was talk of keeping the paradigm by maximising the the MIDI clip both horizontally and vertically so that it fills up the screen. However, I would really like to be able to concentrate on MIDI editing purely in a seperate window.
Anyway, I love Tracktion for almost exactly the same reasons.
Love the track. Post it up in the sticky at the top!

Inline midi editing does feel clunky if you try to do it with just the mouse. I have my shortcut keys setup so that if I press the up arrow key and 0 on the num pad it zooms into the selected clip and if I press the down arrow key it zooms back out to the full mix.

Pro24 Commodore C64
Notator (Logic) Atari
Cubase Atari

If you are interested in the new Amiga it has a new audio software out Evolution 4.
At the moment though the systems (G4s) are still for enthusiasts as OS4 isn't ready till the end of the year but you can run the beta now
Workbench is back and lets hope they can get it marketed

HI
If it was priced right and had good software support I would jump on the (incoming and new) Amiga platform - look how f..... up PC's are due to the completely insane hardware compatability issues that forever crop up.
Never say never!
Porpoise.

Good to see somebody new loving it
About zooming in, try using a mouse with a scroll wheel, the up and down wheel zooms horizonally the same way right clicking and dragging does. One of the things I absolutely loved about T when i first tried it. And the wheel mouse will zoom in around wherever the mouse pointer currently is, so you can easily zoom in on the area you're interested in.
If you're using Tracktion without a wheel mouse, you've not really tried it yet

In my collection of old promo-sheets and infopapers I have a printed proof that there was a development of Steinberg Pro 24 on AMIGA! I've seen a running version myself at Frankfurt Music Fair!
If you like, I can send you a scan...
