someone above mentioned prefuse73...some of his stuff is pretty good but I really like the stuff he puts out as savath and savalas (apropat).

Here's a short list of my favs. Check'em if you like

Autechre: anything released before AE5 is a great stuff IMHO.
Arovane - great Autechre-like stuff, Funkstorung, Plaid,
Ambidextrous, Cylob, Gimmik, Phonem, Yasume, Telefon Tel Aviv, Nikakoi - "Shentimental" (quite Aphex Twin[ish]

at times...

There's plenty of great IDM out there. I just picked some artists who produce tracks not only with well-defined rhytmic section but also with nice melodies so I hope they meet your criteria as far as IDM is concerned

Thanks for all the help! And Plaid is way cool! I've been listening to them for a while myself. I also found a really interesting artist by the name of Kettel. He has a real good grasp on melody which is key to what I'm looking for. Oh,...I see you already mentioned him,...

If you're not into superglitch but a more steady rhythm, "Infected Mushroom". A number of albums, all great in their own right, and easy to listen to over a longer period of time. Plus, they put on a pretty decent live show.

More generally...
a)Check out samples at sites like www.warprecords.com or www.boomkat.com.
b) Read magazines like Wire, Grooves, Pitchfork (online) and so on. Wire free CDs are often good, too.
c) Subscribe to the (much maligned but often very useful) IDM list at hyperreal.org.
d) Pick up cheap label-sampler CDs from labels like Warp, Rephlex, Leaf, Ninja Tune, Mille-Plateaux, Progressive Form, Tigerbeat6, Merck, Ghostly International and so on, and follow up the artists that interest you.

Noisy, ugly, drill and bass/break stuff: drop the lime, Xanopticon and Duran Duran Duran

Hip hop-ish, elaborate beat stuff: Edit "Crying over the pros for no reason" and Funkstorung "Appetite for Destruction"

other: I second the 'Arovane' recommendation, try out Luke Vibert's incredible dnb alias 'Plug', Chris Clark, Hrvatski, etc.

okay, I'm a bit drunk, but...

a lot of the names that people have posted (including myself) - have you actually danced to??

Many of the names are of "dance" artists in the loosest sense.

Somebody metioned that glitch is the modern fretwanking. I tend to agree, even if i do like it (glitch, not masturbating with your guitar), you cannot dance to the vast majority of major Warp recprds modern output unless you have some sort of muscle motor disease.

Wievie Stunder?? C'mon!! try dancing to that!! I have Alec Empire's version of "Hound Dog" and it is near impopssible - however "Hetzjaugt Auf Nazis" is a great track!!

Good call... Xanopticon's 'Liminal Space' is particularly mindblowing. Some of it is more pretty than ugly to my ears though.
What about Lesser, Sagan and End while we're at it?
