a lot of the names that people have posted (including myself) - have you actually danced to??

Many of the names are of "dance" artists in the loosest sense.

Somebody metioned that glitch is the modern fretwanking. I tend to agree, even if i do like it (glitch, not masturbating with your guitar), you cannot dance to the vast majority of major Warp recprds modern output unless you have some sort of muscle motor disease.

Wievie Stunder?? C'mon!! try dancing to that!! I have Alec Empire's version of "Hound Dog" and it is near impopssible - however "Hetzjaugt Auf Nazis" is a great track!!
I don't think dancing comes into 'intelligent', 'dance' and 'music' and when it does it's a cross between Ian Curtis and David Byrne. Freeko geeko scary! :-o

Lots of black clothes and severe haircuts I imagine. And the tendency to spell 'trance' - 'tarnce'.

There's also the bad clothes and body odour contingent in IDM who found that hard to get 'moog' xx-large t-shirt and oldskool nike trainers and have never taken them off since. The beer stains are optional.

Autechre: anything released before AE5 is a great stuff IMHO.
Arovane - great Autechre-like stuff, Funkstorung, Plaid,
Ambidextrous, Cylob, Gimmik, Phonem, Yasume, Telefon Tel Aviv, Nikakoi - "Shentimental" (quite Aphex Twin[ish]:D at times...
Me? lol http://toya.net.pl/~veith (yeah, right :D)
There's plenty of great IDM out there. I just picked some artists who produce tracks not only with well-defined rhytmic section but also with nice melodies so I hope they meet your criteria as far as IDM is concerned :)
Cheers
Ill second that arovane recommendation

IDM is usually indescribably dull music. The fact that anyone would stick the word, 'intelligent' before 'dance music' illustrates the pretentions some people will go to in order to invest in their music a sense of superiority. Pityful!

Who gives a f**k what its called.. Thats the worst argument ive ever heard about why not to like a certain genre.. Its name sucks so therefore the music does too.

i class hybrid as intelligent dance music, because it's f**king beautiful and obviously has a lot of brains behind it. i don't class 'glitch' music as IDM unless it is particularly intelligent with it... else it's just called glitch

but check out hybrid everyone who hasn't yet. they're awesome.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

Can anyone refer me to some good beat heavy music with interesting drones and orcestrated melodies/harmony?
:help:
Thats so wierd.. I just some tight music this morning on the way to school and i looked up on the internet just now.. It was MU-ZIC! crazy! I heard it on seattle's kexp 90.3.. They play some rad electro.

Oh you already mentioned Hybrid..

'Intelligent dance music' does sound pretentious, but I see any music that can twist my emotions as intelligent, whether done simply or not. But yeah, I see your point.. There is a lot of simple shit out there..
