i hear you. thank you for the input. you know...i don't know how ill ever get to try out live. like i was saying, i can't figure out how to get it to do anything other than the demo recordings. am i just an idiot? i know thats a question for the live forums, so ill look over there. but am i the only one having trouble getting it to do more than this? or am i a total old guy non-1337 dorkomatic spaz?

When you download the Live demo, there are a set of easy to follow tutorials that appear in the right hand side of the screen. You really need to go through these just to get you kick started - they actually cover most of the core functionality, and should take you less than an hour to go through. Well worth the effort!

I hope this helps!

By the way, expect the Live 5 demo in a month or so. Check it out then! Although Ableton have added some fantastic new features, they have actually managed to make the program even easier to use in the process.

i have to agree that live has been one of the easiest sequencers to pick up - having used several trackers and logic 5+6 extensively and tried lots of stuff from cubase to reason. it's not perfect for everything but it does some things really well and fast so i decided to buy it in the end (and bought it so late that i'll get v5 for free which is super nice judging by the betas).

the tutorials weren't neccessary for me to pick the software up and start making tunes but going through them later made me realize several shortcuts that made working with live easier. so i wholeheartedly recommend going through them, especially if you don't get grasp of how the program works at first.

aside that, i'd recommend to go with whatever you're familiar and comfortable with for now - you can try out new stuff every now and then and if you find something better for your use, you can always save some cash up and get new tools. i have no experience on doing multitrack recording with live myself since the only multitrack stuff i've done is with logic before i got live.

For anyone reading this who would specifically like to try out multitrack recording in Ableton Live, you can download a tutorial and Live 4 template for 24-track recording here:

thanks for the link headquest, although i've got a similar template ready myself it'll be nice to see if things are done differently in that one.

damn, i guess i'll really have to take my laptop to my friend's band rehearsal place at some point and try out some 8/16 track recordings ... if the internal hd can take it or if i manage to run my audio interface and fw hard drive together flawlessly :)
never stop loving music.
